[Wegmans ]( [Start Shopping]( [delicious celebrations]( Tuesday, December 20, 2022 [ ]( African Beef & Peanut Stew Heri za Kwanzaa! (Happy Kwanzaa) This holiday season, we’re sharing the different ways people celebrate as we explore the delicious traditions around food, family, and culture that unite us. With Kwanzaa just about a week away, let’s take a look at what makes it such a special celebration. First, a little background: The holiday was founded in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, PhD, professor and chairman of Black studies at California State University, Long Beach. Wanting to bring the African American community together to celebrate African food and culture, he combined aspects of different harvest celebrations from various African ethnic groups. He adapted the name from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, which means “first fruits.” The holiday is celebrated from December 26 through January 1. And though it’s relatively new, it’s rich in symbolism and meaning. Each day, a candle is lit in the Kinara (or candleholder), and each day is dedicated to one of seven principles. These are Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). Though every family celebrates Kwanzaa in its own way, it usually involves gift giving, singing, dancing, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional meal. To better honor this holiday, we recently set out on a journey to make our Kwanzaa recipes more authentic, helpful, and exciting. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes peek into what inspired two of our employees when they created the recipes that make up our revitalized Kwanzaa Dinner Menu: “I wanted to showcase and highlight authentic flavors that are true to the holiday, as well as the African Diaspora as a whole,” said Wegmans Chef Joe C. “Making sure these recipes were true to the holiday and the culture is important because authentic culinary representation matters.” Jay B., a Perishable Manager and the creator of our [African Beef and Peanut Stew]( recipe, was inspired by the meaning of the holiday. “The celebration of Kwanzaa is directly linked to creativity, heritage, faith, unity, and culture. These attributes are the essence of culinary life.” Whether this is your first Kwanzaa celebration or your 50th, may it be joyful and flavorful!
