This Week On The SEO Mad Scientist Citations: Structured, Unstructured, Tiered… Do They Matter At All? Hey there, SEO Scientists! Today we wanted to review our upcoming test schedule as we finally determine: How important are citations to local SEO? Back in the day, citations were all the rage. They were what every SEO out there preached as the holy grail of local rankings. But that was long ago in a galaxy far, far away… Today, SEOs seem pretty split on the subject. However, most will agree that, regardless, citations just aren't what they used to be. So with that thought in mind, the SEO Mad Scientist sought to discover; are citations still working, and if so much? How well? We will call these tests our “2023 Local Citaion Tests” for simplicity. In this series of tests, we will explore the different types of citations we can build, how we can optimize them, and if these citations and optimization still hold any value when it comes to ranking locally. The citation types we are testing are defined as follows: - Structured Citations - Unstructured Citations - Structured Citation Citations (Tiered Links) - Unstructured Citations Citations (Tiered Links) Some of the different variations we will test are: - Basic Citations - Niche Citations - Web 2.0 Citations - Misc. Local Directory Citations - Brand CItations (Brand Links) Each of these types and variations can be used in different ways, so we will start by testing the most simple of them all. Structured Citations for the following variations: - Basic Citations (Popular Biz Directories) - Niche Citations (Niche Relevant Local Directory Websites) - Misc. Local Directory Citations (Less Known General Directories In the end, we want to know the following: Do any of these types of citations still impact rankings? Can we create a better ranking impact by how we optimize citations? Phase one of the tests is simple. We test different citation methods on various listings and track if there is a ranking result. If we see a ranking result in phase one tests, we will continue to phase two and see if we can cause any more moments through additional "citation optimization" (optimizing the listing more through content or links) Join us next week as we review each test and benchmark results and finally discover whether citations still help with local rankings. Until next week, happy testing!
