Exciting details inside I worked for many years as a market maker in the over the counter options market. I made a lot of money for my employer and myself. I saw many traders, both professional and amateur. I saw what they did well and what they did poorly. There was one factor that nearly all pros used and virtually no amateurs used. They never asked one simple question before they figured out which option to buy. “Where will the stock go and how fast will it get there?” You see, when people buy stocks, what is in their mind is: I bought the stock and now it will go up. Unfortunately, options traders think the same thing and that is wrong. What they should be thinking is: Where will the stock go and how fast will it get there? The reason for the difference is that knowing the objective and the speed will give you a much better idea of which option to buy. If you expect the market to skyrocket quickly then you can save money by buying a short dated option that is very out of the money. But if you expect a slow bull market over the coming year then you might prefer to buy a slightly out of the money option that is long dated. So think about asking the better question before you put on an option position. Will your projection be right? Probably not. But constantly asking the question will make you better and better at projecting the future price action. You will study more technical analysis to fine tune your projections. You will be a better and more profitable trader. Wanna see me do that?
