[Wealthbuilder LLC] I started my career with giant financial institutions using only fundamental analysis. And I got damn good at it. But my trading profits jumped dramatically when I added technical analysis to my toolbox. Why did I add technicals? And why do I think that traders, particularly beginning traders, should focus on technicals more than fundamentals. There are several reasons: - You have a clear place to put a stop loss order - You should always be in tune with the big trend - You can more easily reduce risk in your portfolio through diversification Let’s take a look at this huge advantages one at a time. The biggest problem most traders have is that they have big losers and that destroys them financially and psychologically. And so they stop trading. They may actually have a good system for trading but they take too much risk. The first thing that technical analysis does is create a clear place to put a stop loss. For example, there may be a strong support from a week ago. Put your stop under that. Why? Because people came in and bought at that point and the price moved higher. If prices go back to that level they may want to buy more so you don’t get stopped out. I can’t tell you how important this is. Right now, I am in the United Arab Emirates as I write this. The US market opens at 6:30 pm and I go to bed at 9:00 pm. So I can’t stay up all night watching the market. But I am very calm about the market and my positions. Why? Because I have stop losses protecting my positions. I can sleep like a baby. I get up the next day and see what happened. If I am stopped out, no problem. That was part of my trading plan. If I am not stopped out, I live to fight another day. Also part of my plan. But the important thing is that I protected my capital. And nothing is more important than that! Capital preservation is more important than capital appreciation. The problem with fundamental analysis is that there is no logical place to put a stop loss. Technical analysis excels at that. So technical analysis is less risky than fundamental analysis! The people at OptionsUniversity.com put together a fantastic course on technical analysis. It is great.
