Also: Abortion on the ballot in Mass.?; MBTA back on track [Donate ❤️]( [View in Browser]( Â June 27, 2022Â 🌧️ Rainy this afternoon, with a high near 79. Good Morning Boston, It's a new week, but we'll still be closely following the local and national implications of [the Supreme Court decision Friday to reverse Roe v. Wade and a constitutional right to an abortion](. Keep an eye out for a special edition newsletter in your inboxes later today on what the decision means for Massachusetts and what's next. - Abortion remains legal in Massachusetts and Gov. Charlie Baker signed an executive order Friday [adding new protections for local providers and those seeking abortion in the Bay State](. However, the race to replace Baker could have an influence on how much farther the state goes to encourage access to reproductive health services.
- Attorney General Maura Healey, who's now [running unopposed in the Democratic gubernatorial primary]( co-authored [a piece for WBUR's Cognoscenti calling for additional action]( including more abortion funds in the state budget, a bill end pregnancy care cost-sharing and legislation requiring insurers to cover abortions.
- Meanwhile, Republican gubernatorial candidate Geoff Diehl and his running mate Leah Allen applauded the Supreme Court's decision, and said they're committed to "protecting innocent life wherever possible." Diehl has [previously criticized]( Massachusetts for going "too far" in allowing access to late-term abortions.
- Fellow GOP hopeful Chris Doughty [told the Associated Press]( he would ânot seek any changes to our stateâs abortion laws.â
- Zoom out: With a Democratic supermajority in the State House, whoever eventually succeeds Baker won't have complete control on the subject â as Baker himself well knows. In 2020, the Legislature overrode Baker after he [vetoed a bill]( expanding abortion access for minors and certain late-stage pregnancies. - Class may be out for the summer, but Boston Public Schools has a big week ahead. WBUR's Fausto Menard explains what to expect:
- First, the state's Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is expected to vote Tuesday on [Commissioner Jeff Riley's plan to designate BPS as "under-performing."]( That doesn't go as far as placing the district under full state control, known as receivership. However, the label does put BPS on the hook for swift improvements while leaving receivership as a looming option down the road, even as Boston officials [criticize]( the state's "unrealistic timelines."
- Second, the Boston School Committee is expected to vote Wednesday on whether Somerville Superintendent Mary Skipper or Boston assistant superintendent Tommy Welch will replace outgoing BPS superintendent Brenda Cassellius. The two finalists for the job participated in public interviews last week. WBUR's Max Larkin has [a recap of what Skipper said here]( while Carrie Jung [covered Welch's pitch for the position](. - Back on track: MBTA officials say [trains on the Green and Orange lines are running and back to a normal schedule again]( (or at least [what counts as normal these days]( after service through downtown Boston was suspended Thursday due to "severely deteriorated" support columns below the Government Center Garage. The MBTA said Sunday that the developer in charge of demolishing the garage installed "necessary supports to uphold the structure" and that experts have deemed it to be "structurally sound." That said, structural engineers will keep a close eye on the tunnel going forward, according to the T.
- There's some disagreement over who's at fault for the deteriorated columns. T officials placed the blame squarely on the company overseeing the garage project, the HYM Investment Group. However, the developers say it was the result of "years of water damage" unrelated to the project. P.S.â Hungry? Come eat bluefish spread and deviled eggs with crabmeat tonight at WBUR CitySpace. The bites will be served alongside a [conversation with Jessica B. Harris]( the author who inspired the Netflix show "High on the Hog" about the foods and foodways of the African Diaspora.
