Also: how to keep artists in Boston; homelessness during the second pandemic year [Donate ❤️]( [View in Browser](  June 23, 2022 ⛅ Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 76. Slight chance of showers after noon. Good Morning Boston, We're inching toward the weekend, which means my spirit is high like gas prices. But according to AAA, the latter is [starting to creep down]( slowly, with regular grade gas averaging $4.97 per gallon. Don't get me wrong; that's still quite costly. But it's down 7 cents from a week ago. Here are the other local news stories I'm keeping an eye on this morning: - What's one of your biggest challenges at work? ["Unrealistic timelines."]( Same goes for Boston Mayor Michele Wu, apparently. WBUR's Max Larkin reports that in a letter released yesterday, Wu and top school officials wrote that they share the state's urgency in wanting to address problems around the district's safety protocols, facilities and educational services. But they don't agree with the state's preferred approach: rapid change, with limited support and strict oversight. - Why this is important: It's just the latest of proposals and counterproposals exchanged between the city and DESE, and it's all in response to a critical report on the Boston Public Schools that was released in May. Since then, Gov. Charlie Baker's administration has floated the possibility of a state takeover (known as receivership), but Wu has repeatedly argued the move would be ["counterproductive."]( - An added wrinkle: BPS is just days away from selecting outgoing superintendent Brenda Cassellius's successor. Public interviews of the two finalists start today. This means whoever gets the job will start during a pretty tense time and has quite a bit of work ahead of them. - We have some new polls from MassInc Polling Group this morning. The first shows that perspectives on what issues facing Massachusetts are most important are shifting. Usually education and health care are at the top of the list, but with inflation, gas prices and a crazy housing market, 16% of respondents said the economy and jobs are the biggest issues facing state government. - The second poll looks at how much support there is for making parts of the MBTA free. According to the polling group, 78% of Massachusetts residents support making public buses free to everyone and 84% support discounted transit fares for low-income commuters. - Voters will be allowed to decide whether or not they support a new surtax on household income above $1 million this November. A Supreme Judicial Court [ruled Wednesday]( that the question and summary Attorney General Maura Healey prepared is "fair and suitable" to be included on the ballot. - This is quite a different ending than in 2018, when the so-called millionaire's tax was kept off the ballot with a successful legal challenge. - A driving safety reminder: slow down and put your phone away. The number of people killed on Massachusetts roads is at its highest level in more than a decade, according to state transportation officials. More than 400 people died on the road last year — a 22% jump from the year before — and that count is on pace to be even higher this year, according to officials. - PSA: More Supreme Court decisions are expected to roll out starting at 10 a.m. this morning, and then again on Friday. A refresher: there are 13 decisions yet to be announced this term and [usually the court saves the biggest cases for last](. P.S.— Think you know how many people donate to WBUR each month?
