Also: A second round of checks to low-income workers; the history of police responding too late to active shooters [Donate ❤️]( [View in Browser](  June 6, 2022 🌤️ Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Good Morning Boston, Happy Monday! Spend some of it outside if you can; the weather should be gorgeous to start the week. Here's what else to expect: - Political conventions in Massachusetts don't necessarily determine which candidates will win at the polls. But they can determine who won't. Two Democratic candidates in the [crowded race to be state's next lieutenant governor]( — state Sen. Adam Hinds and businessman Bret Bero — won't be on the Sept. 6 primary ballot after failing to get enough votes Saturday at the party's [state convention in Worcester](. - The rules require candidates to get at least 15% of the vote from delegates, a group of [over 4,000]( party insiders and activists chosen at local caucuses earlier this spring. The process has been criticized by some current and [former Democratic candidates]( as prohibitive to outsiders and less-conventional candidates (the state's Republican party has the same 15% rule). In response, MassDems chair Gus Bickford [made the case to WBZ]( that the 15% rule makes candidates "stronger." - The outcome doesn't mean Hinds or Bero have to drop out. But it does force them to mount a significantly more difficult write-in campaign if they want to carry on. At the convention, Bero tried to get delegates to agree to waive the 15% rule, but failed. - Massachusetts state officials are putting the second round of $500 checks for low-income workers in the mail today — and it turns out, this round will be bigger than the first. Officials say roughly 300,000 residents should expect to get one of automatic payments, which are intended for those who worked in-person during the pandemic. - Residents are eligible if they made between $13,500 and up to 300% of the federal poverty level from work last year (that's $38,640 for an individual or $79,500 for a household of four). - There's no actual in-person work requirement, which officials say would be too burdensome to verify. This round is instead based solely on 2021 tax returns and will go to eligible residents who weren't among the 240,000 that got a check during the first round based on 2020 returns. - More questions? You can [check out the full eligibility rules online](. - Also on the radar this week: The Massachusetts House will begin the process of overriding Gov. Charlie Baker's [veto of a bill allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses]( this Wednesday.(The bill had already passed through the State House with well over the two-thirds majority support that would be required.) - Speaker Ron Mariano [says]( the bill will make roads safer and "already includes provisions that address the Governor’s concerns, such as safeguards around automatic voter registration and a strong threshold for identity verification." Senate President Karen Spilka says the Senate will also override Baker's veto. - The Celtics are returning to Boston this week with the NBA Finals tied 1-1, after the team dropped Game 2 to the Golden State Warriors last night. Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday, followed by Game 4 on Friday. And, no, just because the two teams are back on the East Coast doesn't mean we're getting a reprieve from the late start times; both games are slated to tip off at 9 p.m. P.S.— Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is making her monthly appearance on Radio Boston at 11 a.m. this morning.
