Also: The C's beat the Heat; seaside towns offer free beach passes to Native Americans [Donate ❤️]( [View in Browser]( Â May 30, 2022Â 🌞 Mostly sunny, with a high near 92. Good Morning Boston, Happy Memorial Day! While you're celebrating the unofficial start of summer, make sure you take some time to reflect on the holiday's true meaning: to honor and remember those who have died serving in the U.S. armed forces. There will be many events to do that in and around Massachusetts. Let's kick it off there: - Gov. Charlie Baker will have a busy morning going to Memorial Day services. He'll be at the Department of Veteran's Services ceremony this morning in Winchendon and the Memorial Day Observance at the Puerto Rican Veterans Monument Plaza in Boston. He'll also head to Lawrence to attend a service [honoring and remembering Marine Sgt. Johanny Rosario]( who was among 13 U.S. service members who died in the Aug. 26 bombing at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. Her family will receive the governor's Fidelity Award today at the service.
- There are plenty of other events for Memorial Day that Baker won't be able to hit, but you can. Marlborough is bringing back its Memorial Day parade for the first time since 2019. And Worcester begins its remembrance ceremony at Hope Cemetery at 9 a.m.
- WCVB has a more comprehensive list of events [here](. - There will be no fireworks as usual tonight at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. The town is [canceling its annual Memorial Day display]( to protect nesting piping plovers in the area.
- Wait, piping plovers? Yes. The tiny birds endangered in New Hampshire and have protected status, and officials don't want the big booms to scare the plovers away from their nests (apparently, the plovers began nesting on the beach after it was temporarily closed in 2020 due to COVID).
- According to the Portsmouth Herald, Hampton Beach's weekly summer fireworks series is also on hold due to the birds, but there's hope the shows can resume by the Fourth of July. - The same can't be said in Barnstable. The town is delaying its Fourth of July fireworks to help protect the local plovers. - Some seaside towns are [offering free beach passes to Native Americans](. It's a symbolic first step in recognizing the importance of the ocean to local Indigenous communities, as a source of both sustenance and lore for thousands of years.
- On the Cape, Truro and Wellfleet are giving passes to any Native American with proof of tribal affiliation. The move comes after officials Narragansett, Rhode Island, approved free seasonal beach passes for anyone with a valid ID from the Narragansett Indian tribe earlier this month. - Eastham has also been offering free seasonal stickers to Indigenous people sine 2020 as part of its efforts to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of The Mayflower. - On Friday, Baker [vetoed the bill]( that would make immigrants without legal status eligible to seek state-issued driver's licenses. Baker has long stated he doesn't believe the RMV, an agency he oversees, has the capability to verify the identities of all potential applicants.
- But the move is really just a symbolic stance at this point. As noted in previous newsletters, the bill passed through the State with more than enough support to override Baker's veto.
- The House plans to take its override vote on June 8, according to Speaker Ron Mariano's office â and Senate President Karen Spilka [says her chamber plans to follow suit](. - You may not be able to beat the heat today, but the Celtics sure beat them last night (despite [a frenzied last few minutes](. The C's are headed to the NBA Finals after their 100-96 win over the Miami Heat last night. They will next take on the Golden State Warriors for the championship. Game 1 of the series is Thursday night. P.S.â Here's a little reminder of [what's opened and closed]( today in Massachusetts. But I hope you won't need it â that you're too busy relaxing to run errands or be productive. May we all be fortunate enough to have our to-do lists wait until tomorrow! Meagan McGinnes
