Also: "Breakthrough" COVID cases starting to trend down in Mass.; a tough loss for the Sox ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  [Donate [WBUR]]( [View in Browser](  [WBUR]( October 20, 2021 Good Morning Boston, 😎 Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Let's leave last night's Red Sox game in the past, shall we? I'm manifesting a ["bones day."]( Here's what we're talking about: - Last night was the second debate between Boston mayoral candidates Michelle Wu and Annissa Essaibi George. The candidates [confronted each other]( issues like rent control and public transportation, and it got heated. The third and final debate will be held on Oct. 25, and it will be broadcast live on WCVB and WBUR. - There was a seven-hour standoff yesterday between Boston police and a man who police say was seen with a gun in the South End. The standoff ended when officers hit 47-year-old Ernest Fields with what they call "less lethal ammunition." Fields has been arrested and faces firearms charges. - During this pandemic, we've been looking at trends rather than single-day numbers to give us an accurate representation of where we're at in this pandemic. We're doing the same with "breakthrough" COVID cases – and the trend looks promising. The state health department reported more than 3,400 cases in fully vaccinated people last week. That's a drop of 15% from the week before. Zooming out, we also know that since vaccinations began late last year, fully vaccinated people have accounted for 1% of positive tests. So once again I'll say this: The best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from serious illness or death from the coronavirus is to get your shots. The science is there and suggests the vaccines are working very well. - PSA: A new ruling by the state's Supreme Court means insurance companies may have to pay you more after a car crash. Yesterday, the court ruled that insurers must pay for not only car repairs – which is what the companies were on the hook for before – but also any diminished value of the damaged car. That's even after it's repaired. The only catch: It will be up to owners to prove the worth. - The Red Sox had a heartbreaking 9-2 loss to the Astros last night in game four of the ALCS. The game was tied in the top of the ninth, but then Boston's bullpen collapsed. As our senior digital editor Roberto Scalese [said on Twitter]( "That inning was the baseball equivalent of slamming the car door on your fingers." Now the series is tied at two games each. The teams are back at it right away, with game four this afternoon at Fenway. - And for you basketball fans, it's opening night for the Celtics. They're away, playing the New York Knicks. P.S.– Election Day in Boston is less than two weeks away.
