[WBUR]( August 19, 2021 Good Morning Boston, âï¸ Cloudy, with a high near 81. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. While we don't quite know what Mark Zuckerberg is going to announce today about the future of Facebook – we had some [funny "wrong answers only" guesses]( though – we do know what Boston is talking about this morning. Here's the rundown: - If you're heading to Martha's Vineyard, expect to mask up. Starting today, an indoor mask mandate takes effect in three of the island's communities: Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Tisbury. This mandate not only requires masks in all indoor public spaces, but also private spaces that are open to the public. And back on the mainland, Somerville could instate an indoor mask mandate as early as tomorrow. The city's board of health votes on it tonight. - Speaking of masks, Gov. Charlie Baker is still rejecting the idea of a statewide mask mandate in schools. Even so, he's [extremely confident]( that nearly every single unvaccinated student in Massachusetts will wear face coverings this fall. Here's his logic for encouraging masking without mandating it: "We made a strong recommendation on this, and as I said, I believe the vast majority, if not all, school districts are going to adopt that recommendation, which I think is a good thing." - What we're watching: Jury deliberations are resuming today in the trial of Thomas Latanowich, who is accused of shooting and killing Yarmouth police officer Sean Gannon three years ago while Gannon served a search warrant. It's day three of deliberations. We'll be sure to let you know the verdict when it's in. - There was another small earthquake on the North Shore yesterday. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 1.3 magnitude tremor struck yesterday afternoon, centered in Peabody. It's the third to shake that area in the last month. - Hitting the open water? Heads up that there's a go-slow zone in effect for waters south and southeast of Nantucket. Why? Right whales! The endangered species was spotted in the area so the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is asking boaters to avoid it or travel at 10 knots or less until the end of the month. P.S.– WBUR’s [@simonfrios]( is looking to speak to Boston-area renters who have something to say about the current market — whether it’s better or worse than before the pandemic.
