[WBUR]( June 3, 2021 Good Morning Boston, âï¸ Cloudy, with a high near 71. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Happy Thursday to everyone, except the Lion's Mane jellyfish spotted in Hull. Did you know it's one of the world's largest jellyfish and can grow up to 6-feet wide, with tentacles up to 100 feet long?! Hard pass. Here's what else is on our radar this morning: - In yesterday's newsletter, we started to talk about the [tug of war over the state's federal pandemic aid funds]( between the Legislature and Gov. Charlie Baker. It's heating up. Yesterday, lawmakers doubled down on their plan to put aside the $5.3 billion in aid into an account they could control over the next few years, until 2023. Baker thinks the four communities that were under-reimbursed by the feds – Chelsea, Everett, Methuen and Randolph – need the money now. The spat and the schedule for typical formal legislative sessions could leave these communities in limbo for at least the next two weeks, if not longer. - Newton city councilors last night passed new zoning rules to restrict where gun shops can be located in the city. Under the new rules, there are three areas in Newton where shops can operate, all away from schools and homes. The rest of the city is off limits. - Heading to the Vineyard or Nantucket? Expect more delays today from the Steamship Authority. It was hit by a ransomware attack that has taken down its website and phone system for booking or changing tickets. Officials recommend people buy their tickets at the terminal, with cash if possible. - The Boston Harbor Islands have made the top of a new list, though this one is not for their natural beauty. The islands are included as one of America's most endangered historic places, according to the National Trust For Historic Preservation. It was added for the risks they face from climate change, sea level rise and erosion. - Attention Worcester readers: Don't swim in Indian Lake today (this includes dogs, too). The city is treating it with chemicals to prevent algae blooms later in the season. - Good news: Live Boston Ballet shows will return this fall, just in time for the holidays. The season will begin with The Nutcracker in November and conclude with Swan Lake next spring. More details on safety precautions like mask wearing or distancing will come closer to the opening. P.S.– We’re celebrating 50 years of NPR! Woo! A lot has changed since the start of public radio, but what hasn’t changed is the need for reliable journalism: on air, online, at events and in this newsletter.
