Also: Mass. part of fight to block Sackler bid for opioid immunity; celebrating NPR's 50th anniversary of the first broadcast ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  [Donate [WBUR]]( [View in Browser](  [WBUR]( May 3, 2021 Good Morning Boston, ☁️ Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. NPR is marking a [pretty big anniversary]( today: it's been 50 years since the airing of its first broadcast. And look how far we've come! We're not only connecting with you through the radio, but also in podcasts, online, at events and in your inbox. Thanks for celebrating with me this morning. Now, onto the news: - Boston's new police oversight agency is officially up and running starting today. Attorney Stephanie Everett begins her first day on the job as executive director of the city's Office of Police Accountability and Transparency, and her first big assignment is to investigate [what happened with Patrick Rose.]( - Massachusetts reported yesterday its lowest number of new daily COVID cases since November, and the seven-day positive test average is down to 1.49%. That's promising. Part of this can be credited to the continued vaccination push across the state. As of now, 2.6 million people in the state are now fully vaccinated, a jump of 300,000 from the last week. Keep wearing your masks indoors and getting those shots! - Pre-K students through eighth graders are back in the classroom for fully in-person learning in Worcester Public Schools starting today. They had been granted a waiver from the state to start later so they could better prepare for the transition. Worcester high school students are back in two weeks. PSA: Do you have five or more unpaid parking tickets in Somerville? You'll need to pay them within 48 hours if you want to avoid getting towed. The city last year paused booting and towing for unpaid tickets, but now ["they're baaack."]( - Zoom out: The COVID-19 outbreak in India is raging, reaching the worst levels the world has seen thus far. The Biden administration will impose a travel ban on anyone who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. in order to avoid any further spread of variants that have driven cases there. There are [some exemptions]( like journalists and Indian students coming to the U.S. for classes. Local groups like the [India Association of Greater Boston]( are trying to help from afar by raising money and partnering with aid groups to donate much-needed supplies, like oxygen. P.S.– In honor of NPR's 50th anniversary, we want to hear what public radio has meant to you over the years.
