Here's a brief recap of what's happened so far and ways to get the latest from WBUR and NPR. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [View in Browser]( | [Donate]( [WBUR] [WBUR]( WBUR | Special Edition January 6, 2021 Good evening, We’re continuing to follow the events in Washington, D.C., where a group of pro-Trump extremists overwhelmed police and [smashed its way into the U.S. Capitol building](. Before we get into the details, this is clearly a rapidly evolving situation; by the time you read this newsletter, things will almost certainly have changed. Stay up to date with the events happening on the ground in several ways: - We’ll continue to provide updates on [wbur.org](. - [Listen]( to NPR special coverage on WBUR until 6 p.m., followed by All Things Considered until at least 10 p.m. At that hour, we'll turn to the BBC. - Watch [PBS Newshour live]( for the latest updates from the Capitol, as well as continued coverage of the Electoral College certification. - We also put together a [Twitter list of D.C. journalists]( to follow. Here’s your brief recap: Thousands of Trump supporters streamed into the city to protest today’s [largely ceremonial joint session of Congress]( in which the results of the Electoral College vote would be certified. But around 2 p.m., a mob of extremists marched up the steps of the Capitol, breaching security to storm the building. Soon after, the Capitol devolved into chaos, was put on lockdown and everyone inside was ordered to shelter in place. At least one person was shot inside the building and shortly after died, according to[The Associated Press](. Reporters and hill staffers took surreal photos and videos of insurrectionists swarming the halls and standing on the dais in the Senate chamber. This appears to be the first time the U.S. Capitol Building has been infiltrated since the British burned the building in 1814. A little after 4 p.m., President-elect Joe Biden took to the airwaves, urging the extremists to leave the Capitol and [demanding that Trump "step up"]( and tell his supporters to stand down. Shortly after, Trump [posted a video]( commiserating with the people who spent the day clashing with police, asking them to go home and repeating his discredited claims of a stolen election. "Go home, we love you, you're very special," he said. As of this email send, Twitter appeared to have removed Trump's tweet. [Here's the transcript of his remarks](. By 6 p.m., the Capitol was once again secured, according to [The Associated Press](. As night falls, police and the National Guard are gearing up for what could be a long night. To help encourage people to go home, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered a citywide curfew that began at 6 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m. Thursday. You can dive deeper into WBUR and NPR coverage below. We’ll give you more information on all of this and more in tomorrow morning’s WBUR Today. — Roberto Scalese and Meagan McGinnes [@BertoScalese]( [@meaganmcginnes]( newsletters@wbur.org The Rundown url[Pro-Trump Extremists Storm Capitol, Halting Congress' Electoral College Tally]( Supporters of President Trump, responding to his call to head to the U.S. Capitol, breached the complex, resulting in violence in the seat of America's federal government.
