July 2, 2020
Good Morning Boston,
ð Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 86.
Summer 2020 doesn't have to be canceled; it's just going to look different. Some recent openings and announcements have me hopeful that we can have a little fun while staying safe. Here's what you need to know:
- Cape Cod beaches open today, with coronavirus-related safety guidelines in place. The National Seashore says two of its six beaches will not have lifeguards. And this is a really important note: Visitor centers and public showers will be closed, but bathrooms will be open and sanitized on a regular basis.
- Need a family outing or date night idea? Boston is temporarily turning some city parking lots into drive-in movie theaters this month. You can catch flicks like "Frozen II" and "Jurassic Park" on the big screen Wednesdays at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and the Wentworth Institution of Technology starting next week.
- Once summer fun is over, it's back to school... if schools can afford the costs of meeting the state's safety guidelines. More than 100 school committees across the state are calling on officials to fully reimburse them for all coronavirus-related expenses. What's the running tab? With additional staffing, increased transportation costs and more materials, they're looking at an additional $1.8 million on average per district.
- The U.S. continues to shatter records when it comes to the coronavirus – but not the good ones. More than 50,000 new cases were [reported in a single day]( yesterday.
- Attention small business owners: House members [unanimously passed]( an extension of the $660 billion Paycheck Protection Program. The PPP had expired Tuesday at midnight. If President Trump signs the extension, the program will operate through Aug. 8.
P.S. – Taking a walk along the Rose Kennedy Greenway? You'll have plenty of artwork to see. [Check out these new installations.](
