June 17, 2020
Good Morning Boston,
😎 [Sun and clouds](. Highs in the 77-83 degree range.
Most of us are only half way through the work week, but for many students and teachers across the state today, it's summer vacation time. Congrats on getting through one tough school year. Here's what you should know today about the local coronavirus outbreak and safety plan:
- Don't forget: There are 52 free, pop-up COVID-19 testing sites set up across Massachusetts today and tomorrow for residents who recently attended large gatherings, including protests and demonstrations. Even though many demonstrators are [already taking steps to minimize the spread of COVID-19]( Gov. Charlie Baker still really wants you to get tested if you're attending protests.
- Somerville will also begin offering free mobile COVID-19 testing to residents today. It will be located at Prospect Hill Academy from noon to 2 p.m. and appointments are required.
- Nurses are still concerned about the safety of cleaning and reusing N95 masks, even after a new slate of tests found that used masks retained their 95% filtration capacity after five cleanings. Nurses still aren't sold and have [renewed their calls]( stop the practice.
- Lawmakers have [questions about how MCI Framingham]( a state prison for women, has handled the ongoing pandemic. A recent inspection found that some workers were not properly using PPE like masks, and those who were didn't have ones that fit them correctly.
- Feeling lucky? The state gaming commission could vote today on coronavirus-related safety requirements for the three casinos in the state. They can't reopen until at least June 29 under the phased reopening plan.
- By the numbers: The state reported 18 new deaths Tuesday due to COVID-19, bringing the confirmed statewide death toll to 7,504. Officials also reported 140 new confirmed cases and 6,361 new molecular tests.
P.S.– This Friday is Juneteenth. For those of you less familiar with the holiday, it's considered the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the U.S. Celebrations usually include everything from parades and concerts, to readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. But this year will look different (and not just because of COVID-19). The first congressional hearing on reparations for slavery in more than a decade will also be held on Friday. Before the big day, take the time to [learn more about Juneteenth and its history here](.
