The WBUR Weekender
May 16, 2020
ð Weekend Weather: Today there's plenty of sunshine with highs 65-70. A little cooler with more clouds on Sunday.
Good morning,
We're social distancing from each other, but when it comes to dogs, cats and rabbits, more people are cuddling with new furry friends. Pet adoption numbers have spiked locally and nationally during the coronavirus crisis.
“Everyone right now has more time on their hands, which is wonderful for a new pet,” Rob Halpin, director of communications for the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center, said. “It’s the same reason it’s a wonderful time to adopt a new pet when it’s summer vacation.”
But Halpin recognizes that these are not normal times. Some pet parents are nervous about how their animals will acclimate after the pandemic. Here are two things he thinks new pet owners should consider:
Establish a schedule for your pet. That means the pet waking up, going to sleep, getting walked and fed at the same time every day. This will make it easier once people start leaving the house for work again.
Practice separation behaviors. To help prevent or alleviate separation anxiety, try leaving the pet in the house while you go to the backyard or out on the deck for a little bit of time.
