For some with less trained ears, they can tell that something is ‘off’ even though they don’t recognize that the B string is flat by a few cents. What some younger mixers & producers may not realize is that even drums – as short and punchy as they are – have a pitch. We can easily manipulate the pitch of drums in our mixes & productions – and for a few main reasons: (1.) to correct tuning issues in a mix, or (2.) to creatively manipulate drums to find new feels and new sounds. A life-preserver for your mix When a song’s drums are out of tune, many people might not pick out the fact that the kick, snare and hat are out of key with the other instruments, but they might feel that the whole track is a bit ‘off’. There is actually a good chance they won’t notice it at all – until it’s fixed. When the drums are in tune with the rest of the track, that off-balance feeling will be greatly reduced, and everything will fall into harmony (literally). If you need to change the pitch of drums that have already been recorded or sampled, you generally have 2 ways to do it: (1) replace the drum tracks completely, or (2) pitch shift them. Replacing drum tracks, whether acoustic or sampled, is time consuming. Pitch shifting drums with standard pitch-shifters will almost certainly introduce unwanted artifacts and reduce the punch, snap, crackle and pop that all good drums should have. Most pitch shifters are built for shifting harmonic content of instruments or vocals—they’re not built to work with highly transient sounds like drums that only hit for a few milliseconds, but which the brain can certainly perceive as having a pitch.
