The world-class producer/mixer who’s worked with everyone from John Legend, Dua Lipa and Keith Urban to Adele, Pharrell, Taylor Swift and Aerosmith – among many others? Yes, that Greg Wells. The guy’s résumé speaks for itself, but out of everything he’s done over his long career, what I remember more than any other is a [video]( from a few years back where Greg talks about a plugin he uses to “make it sound like a record.” Not that kind of record What does Greg mean exactly when he says, “make it sound like a record?” He wasn’t talking about our [Abbey Road Vinyl]( plugin because he didn’t mean to make it sound like a vinyl record. When producers talk about “making a record” or “make it sound like a record” they’re talking about a professionally mastered product that can be sold to the masses – whether in digital form through streaming or download, or on analog mediums such as vinyl and tape. The word “record” in industry slang, for our purposes, is best translated to mean “professionally mastered music.” So, what’s the plugin Greg Wells uses to “make it sound like professionally mastered music”? [Linear Phase Multiband Compressor]( – one of Waves’ most powerful mastering tools. [Linear Phase Multiband Compressor]( What makes a mix sound like a master? The topic of mastering is far more in-depth than we can get into here, and if you’ve done your job well as a mixer there really shouldn’t be a need for too much processing at the mastering stage. But there is, however, one type of processing almost every mix will pass through at the end – compression. And not just any compression. If it’s a modern, commercial, professional-sounding mix, we’re talking about multiband compression. Your mix may also pass through some corrective EQ, a limiter to raise the level, maybe a harmonics processor to warm it up – but it’s the multiband compression that will have the most impact when it comes to making your mix sound mastered. That’s because multiband compression balances a mix by dividing it into frequency ranges, compressing each one individually according to the needs of the material. This balancing is crucial to giving your mix a “radio-ready” sound. That subtle difference – using multiband compression instead of (or in addition to) wideband compression – is the process that, according to Greg Wells, “makes it sound like a record.” If you saw the video then you saw Greg Wells explaining that it was actually Mika – the artist behind the #1 hit “Grace Kelly” – who said, “now it sounds like a record.” Take a minute and [watch Greg Wells describe the exact moment Mika jumped out of his chair](. Spoiler Alert: It was right after he heard his mix with the Linear Phase Multiband Compressor. What’s so special about “linear phase” processing? Not many people realize this, but the Linear Phase Multiband Compressor is really like a naked version of our legendary [C4 Multiband Compressor](. The reason I call it a “naked version” is because it looks and works exactly like the C4 – but without any added sonic color. The C4 is a much-loved plugin by many, many mixers and producers for the particular sound it gives when processing an instrument or group using multiband compression. The difference between the C4 and Linear Phase multiband compressors is that Linear Phase adds no color to the sound – it applies multiband compression without imparting any artifacts or smearing of the transients. Artifacts and smeared transients aren’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, they’re part of what many people love about the C4 sound. But once you’ve finished a mix and are at the mastering stage, usually what you’re looking for is straight, clean, transparent processing – not color. Linear Phase Multiband Compressor provides exactly that – transparent multiband compression that changes nothing about the sound of your mix except to glue it together in a way that sounds professional. Or, as Mika would say, “now it sounds like a record.” More than a compressor If few people realize the connection between the C4 and Linear Phase Multiband Compressors, then even less people know about all the other stuff you can do with it besides compression. To get an idea of what I’m talking about, grab Linear Phase Multiband Compressor and scroll through the presets, which you can use: - To fix a mix - As a dynamic EQ - As a vocal processor for singing or voiceovers - As an “uncompressor” to undo too much compression and restore squashed dynamics - To enhance low-level signals using upward compression And that’s just an overview. To really learn how to get the most out of this powerful plugin, it’s best to give the [manual]( a quick read. Of course, if you’re already convinced of its greatness and want to skip all that – we’ll meet you halfway with an extra $10 off that you can use on top of the already slashed sale price. 48HRS Only: Limited quantity $10 OFF Linear Phase Multiband Compressor Use this code during checkout: LINMB10 Valid through October 3, 2022, 05:00 AM EDT.
