However, much of the dry signal overlaps with the compressed audio, which has a masking effect. This masking detracts from New York-style compression’s effectiveness. Instead of blending the compressed signal with a dry signal (like traditional parallel compression), blending the compressed signal with an expanded signal addresses the “masking” issue and results in more natural transients without smearing. The expander isolates and emphasizes the peaks slightly before re-mixing them with the compressed sound. The resulting effect is more defined than traditional parallel compression, and more natural than using a transient shaper—without compromising the perceived “energy” added by the compressed audio. Like any preset involving dynamics, the input level has a major influence on the sound. To use the StudioVerse NYC+ Compression preset, choose Expand Solo and adjust the Expand Tighten control for the optimum percussive peak sound. Then, choose Comp Solo and adjust the Comp Ratio and Comp Amount controls for fat compression. After optimizing each parallel path, use their Level controls to balance the fatness of compression with the percussive snap of expansion—and listen to your drum sounds go beyond traditional New York-style compression.
