Not to be a downer, but times are tough in the realm of creative enterprise, as you may have noticed. A handful of corporate megaconglomerates control how most culture is made and distributed. Paintings and sculptures seem to exist so hedge funders can trade them like Pokémon cards. Making a living and keeping your head screwed on tight, never simple, have grown increasingly complex in the past couple of years. But there are still plays, films, visual artworks, clothes, books, movies, TV shows, newsletters, podcasts, pieces of music, performances, etc., that evade the imperative to smooth their rough edges in hopes of reaching the biggest audience possible. I think they’re more special right now than ever. Each week in the newsletter, I’ll be talking to someone who made something cool to find out how they did it and how they’re living. You can expect to find new personalities to become obsessed with as well as fresh insights into some well-known faves. There’s plenty of publicity-driven fluff content out there, and this isn’t that — you and I would both be so bored! That being said, this is a good newsletter to subscribe to if you want to stay ahead of the curve on what interesting people are working on now.
