President Trump will leave the hospital this evening; the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict escalates. Tonight's Sentences was written by Benjamin Rosenberg. TOP NEWS The latest on the growing White House coronavirus cluster Alex Brandon/AP - After President Donald Trump announced early Friday morning that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, a growing number of government officials have also announced they tested positive, including three Republican senators and White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. [[Vox / Benjamin Rosenberg](] - McEnany was at the White House event on September 26 where Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, as were Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who both tested positive. Attendees were packed tightly together, and few wore masks. [[NPR / Sam Gringlas](] - While it is unclear whether the White House cluster stems from the Barrett event, Trump’s months of downplaying the pandemic’s severity surely didn’t help. The president held rallies in four states — plus last Tuesday’s debate in Ohio — in the week before he announced his positive test. [[Atlantic / Olga Khazan and Russell Berman](] - Roughly 20 people from this cluster now have the virus, including three journalists from the White House press corps, a White House staffer, and Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien. Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, has tested positive as well. [[Politico / Alex Isenstadt](] - Trump was transported to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, on Friday to receive treatment. White House physician Sean Conley said Trump’s oxygen levels dropped significantly on Friday and Saturday, but his condition has improved since. [[Washington Post / Derek Hawkins, Felicia Sonmez, Seung Min Kim, and Hannah Knowles](] - Conley’s press conference on Saturday morning left more questions than answers. He said Trump had been positive for 72 hours, which would have meant since Wednesday morning — nearly two full days before Trump’s announcement. [[Time / Madeleine Carlisle](] - According to Conley, Trump could be discharged as soon as Monday. But the president has taken three different Covid-19 drugs since arriving at Walter Reed, and while Conley said Trump has been fever-free since Friday morning, he declined to say what his temperature was. [[Vox / Julia Belluz](] - On Sunday afternoon, Trump took a brief ride in a protected Secret Service vehicle to acknowledge his supporters gathered outside the hospital. Trump wore a mask, but he still left the agents in the vehicle with him at risk of contracting the virus. [[CNN / Kevin Liptak](] - Trump tweeted Monday afternoon that he will depart from Walter Reed at 6:30, presumably returning to the White House to continue to receive medical care. [[Associated Press](] [Learn more about RevenueStripe...]( Conflict escalates between Armenia and Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan and Armenia are engaged in a tense military conflict, with dozens of people killed and hundreds more wounded in the last week or so. The two countries are both former Soviet republics, and their border has been disputed ever since the Soviet Union collapsed. [[CBS News / Alexandra Odynova](] - Armenia captured large swaths of Azerbaijan prior to a 1994 ceasefire, causing roughly 600,000 Azerbaijanis to flee their homes. Azerbaijan, an oil exporter, has set its sights on recapturing the region for the last 26 years. [[NYT / Andrew E. Kramer](] - Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city, was hit hard by Armenian forces in response to Azerbaijan’s shelling of Stepanakert, the capital of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. Armenian President Ilham Aliyev said in a televised address that “Nagorno-Karabakh is our land.” [[BBC News](] - The conflict threatens to draw in bigger regional powers, including Russia and Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is backing the Azerbaijani campaign, which has put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene. So far, Russia has stayed out of the fighting. [[CNN / Nick Paton Walsh](] - The US has also stayed out of the conflict. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged another ceasefire, saying he has spoken with leaders from both Armenia and Azerbaijan. This continues the Trump administration’s policy of staying away from Russia’s sphere of influence. [[Guardian / Michael Safi and Julian Borger](] MISCELLANEOUS Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron released audio recordings of the grand jury proceedings in Breonna Taylor’s case on Friday, revealing conflicting accounts about whether police announced themselves before entering Taylor's apartment. [[AP / Dylan Lovan and Piper Hudspeth Blackburn](] - New York Mayor Bill de Blasio will close public schools on Tuesday in nine zip codes in Brooklyn and Queens where Covid-19 cases are rising rapidly. The areas all have high numbers of Orthodox Jews, who have not always adhered to the public health guidelines on mask-wearing and social distancing. [[NYT / Amelia Nierenberg and Adam Pasick](] - Four million acres of land in California has now burned in this year’s record-setting wildfire season. That more than double the previous high of 1.8 million acres set in 2018. [[LA Times / Alex Wigglesworth and Joseph Serna](] - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega continues to crack down on the media. The country may pass legislation to require international journalists to register as foreign agents, and Ortega’s Sandinista party has the votes to do so. [[Washington Post / Ismael López Ocampo and Mary Beth Sheridan](] - The NFL has had a rough week handling the Covid-19 crisis. The Tennessee Titans’ game was postponed due to a number of positive tests, and the New England Patriots’ game was moved back a day after quarterback Cam Newton tested positive.
