- President Donald Trump has announced his intent to choose his nominee for the Supreme Court vacancy on Saturday, and has said he will nominate a woman to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died last Friday. [[ABC News / Jordyn Phelps](]
- Senate Republicans appear to have enough votes to confirm the nominee before Election Day, something Trump has pushed the Senate to do in case the Court needs to rule on a disputed election, as it did in 2000. [[CNBC / Dan Mangan](]
- The GOP Senate has made it clear that it will not uphold its position from 2016, when Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his colleagues did not even grant a hearing to Merrick Garland, President Barack Obamaâs nominee to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia. [[Vox / Li Zhou](]
- Ginsburgâs dying wish, her granddaughter said, was for her successor to be chosen by the next president. But Trump baselessly disputed that wish earlier this week, saying it was actually crafted by congressional Democrats. [[Washington Post / Aaron Blake](]
- When Trump paid his respects to Ginsburg at the Supreme Court building on Thursday, he was met with boos and jeers from demonstrators, who chanted âvote him outâ and âhonor her wish.â It was a rare instance of the president facing citizens who arenât necessarily his supporters. - Amy Coney Barrett, a judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago, is viewed as a leading candidate for the pick. Barrett identifies as a strict constructionist who believes the Constitution as it was originally written is not open to interpretation. [[Vox / Dylan Matthews](]
- Another possibility is Barbara Lagoa, a Cuban American from Florida, who could be chosen in an effort to help Trump secure the Latinx vote that will be crucial for him to win a battleground state with many electoral votes. [[NPR / Nina Totenberg and Domenico Montanaro](]
- Saturday marks just 38 days until Election Day, so the Senate would have to move lighting fast to confirm Trumpâs appointment before November 3. Since 1975, only two justices â John Paul Stevens and Sandra Day OâConnor â were confirmed fewer than 38 days after being nominated. [[NYT / Peter Baker and Nicholas Fandos](]

South Korean official shot dead after crossing into North Korea
- South Korean authorities said a government worker was shot and killed after crossing into North Korean waters on the west side of the peninsula. The official was believed to be trying to defect to North Korea. [[CNN / Gawon Bae and Jake Kwon](]
- North Korean troops found the man Tuesday on a floating object near the countriesâ disputed maritime border. He had disappeared from a government ship that was looking into unauthorized fishing on the South Korean side of the boundary on Monday. [[Associated Press / Hyung-Jin Kim](]
- Claims that the 47-year-old official with the oceans and fisheries ministry was defecting were met with skepticism â defections from North to South Korea are fairly common, but to go the other direction is highly unusual. [[The Guardian / Justin McCurry](]
- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gave a rare apology, saying in a statement, âI am deeply sorry that an unexpected and unfortunate thing has happened in our territorial waters that delivered a big disappointment to President Moon Jae-in and the people of the South.â [[NYT / Choe Sang-Hun](]
- The apology appears to have reduced the risk that the killing could lead to escalating tensions between the two Koreas. Moon has been looking to improve relations with the North, and he and Kim have exchanged messages about responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. [[Washington Post / Min Joo Kim](]
