Federal officers start detaining protesters in Portland, Oregon; Georgia's governor sues to stop a mask mandate. Tonight's Sentences was written by Cameron Peters. TOP NEWS Black Lives Matter protests are still happening Robyn Beck/AFP via Getty Images - In late May and throughout June, protests in response to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery engulfed the country. Since then, they’ve faded from the headlines — but protests around the country haven’t stopped happening. [[Vox / Fabiola Cineas](] - In Portland, Oregon, though, continued activism took a particularly dark turn this week. Protesters in the city have been tear-gassed and targeted with “less lethal” munitions by police; federal officers have also been deployed. [[The Oregonian / Piper McDaniel and Ryan Nguyen](] - On Saturday, at least one protester was shot in the head by federal officers using less lethal rounds. According to the mother of Donavan LaBella, he suffered skull fractures from the round, which did enough damage to require “some facial reconstruction surgery.” [[OPB / Jonathan Levinson](] - Federal officers — in military-style fatigues with no visible identification — have reportedly also taken to detaining protesters on the street with no apparent warning or explanation given. Video and protester accounts show Portlanders being bundled into unmarked vans by officers. [[NYT / Sergio Olmos and Mike Baker](] - One man detained earlier this week after leaving a peaceful protest described the incident as “like being preyed upon” in an interview with the Washington Post. Experts have suggested that the legality of such an action by federal officers is highly questionable. [[Washington Post / Katie Shepherd](] - Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, along with other Oregon officials, has sharply condemned the presence of federal officers and called for them to be removed from the city. In a tweet Thursday, Brown said that President Trump “is on a mission to provoke confrontation for political purposes.” [[Twitter / Gov. Kate Brown](] - In Louisville, Kentucky, meanwhile, 87 people were arrested on Tuesday at a peaceful protest outside of the state attorney general’s house. Protesters have continued to demand justice for Breonna Taylor since she was shot to death by Louisville police officers earlier this year. [[Louisville Courier-Journal / Billy Kobin](] - According to Louisville police, all 87 protesters were arrested on the same three charges, including a felony charge that carries a potential prison sentence of one to five years if convicted. [[Washington Post / Katie Shepherd](] - As of Friday, however, none of the three officers who killed Taylor have been charged in her death, and only one has been fired. Taylor was killed in March when police stormed her apartment in a "no knock" raid and shot her at least eight times. [[Vox / Anna North and Fabiola Cineas](] The US coronavirus outbreak is still getting worse - On Thursday, the US reported at least 75,600 new coronavirus cases, re-breaking its single-day case record for the 11th time in the past month. Three states also set record death tolls from Covid-19. [[New York Times](] - Texas also broke a single-day record on Friday with nearly 15,000 cases. That figure bumped the Lone Star State past 300,000 cumulative coronavirus cases to date, a marker that only New York, California, and Florida had previously surpassed. [[NBC News / Joe Murphy and Corky Siemaszko](] - According to an unpublished White House task force report obtained by the Center for Public Integrity, the resurgent outbreak has grown so severe in the US that at least 18 states are in a coronavirus “red zone” and should reimplement some lockdown measures. [[Center for Public Integrity / Liz Essley Whyte](] - And in Georgia, where cases are climbing, hospitals are starting to fill up. A Georgia Public Broadcasting report Thursday found that parts of Georgia’s health care system have become so overloaded that officials are looking to transfer patients to out-of-state hospitals. [[Georgia Public Broadcasting / Wayne Drash](] - Also on Thursday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp filed a lawsuit against the city of Atlanta seeking to overturn its mask mandate despite the rising danger posed by the coronavirus. Kemp’s lawsuit also challenges other lockdown measures that were reimplemented in Atlanta earlier this month. [[AJC / Greg Bluestein](] - The rationale behind Kemp’s lawsuit is difficult to fathom: Since the coronavirus pandemic began, a scientific consensus has emerged behind the value of wearing masks. As Vox’s German Lopez points out, masks both help limit the risk of transmission and have been shown to slow community spread of the virus. [[Vox / German Lopez](] MISCELLANEOUS Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg announced on Friday that she is undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer, but plans to remain on the Supreme Court. [[Twitter / Paula Reid](] - A new Pentagon policy announced on Friday will effectively ban Confederate flags from all DOD property. [[Politico / Lara Seligman](] - India surpassed 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases on Friday, making it only the third such nation to reach that mark. [[NPR / Sushmita Pathak](] - Capt. Tom Moore, a 100-year-old World War II veteran, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth on Friday for raising more than £32 million for the UK’s National Health Service. [[CNN / Rob Picheta](] - The Oregon Zoo’s “aqua dachshunds” — also known as otters — are extremely cute and exactly what you need to end the week. Protesters in Portland have been shot in the head, swept away in unmarked cars, and repeatedly tear-gassed by uninvited and unwelcome federal agents. We won’t rest until they are gone."
