2024 Greatest Generation Proof Half Dollar obverse [Remind Me]( Black History is American History As we approach the tail end of Black History Month, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite coins and medals that celebrate Black Americans and their contributions to our Nation. Black Americans throughout our history have represented the U.S. in the Olympics winning gold and breaking records, liberated enslaved people even when doing so was punishable by law, and served in our Armed Forces in every American war including the Greatest Generation that served in World War II. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owens won four gold medals in a stadium packed with Nazi supporters and Adolf Hitler himself, dispelling the myth of Aryan Supremacy as the world watched. Jesse Owens was posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian contributions to public service, civil rights, and international goodwill. Harriet Tubman, well known as a conductor in the Underground Railroad, also served in the Union Army as a nurse, scout and spy. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the Civil War, the Combahee River Raid, which resulted in more than 700 enslaved people being freed. Her legacy lives on in the Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coins which share her quintessentially American story with all of us today. The Montford Point Marines were the first Black Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after President Roosevelt established the Fair Employment Practices Commission in 1941. They fought for the U.S. in battles at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Peleliu and Saipan during World War II. They were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on June 27, 2012, to recognize their personal sacrifice and service to their country. Discover these and other inspiring American stories of courage, determination, and sacrifice with our African American coins and medals!
