The city’s textile mills were among the most technologically advanced at the time and were operated by a predominantly young, female workforce, known as “mill girls.” This rich history is showcased on the quarter’s reverse design, created by Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Mint sculptor Phebe Hemphill. The representation showcases a mill girl working at a loom with a view of Lowell, including the Boott Mill clock tower through the window. Today, Lowell National Historical Park spans 142 acres within the park’s boundaries, and another 583 acres make up the Lowell Historic Preservation District. The complex includes a power canal system, a cotton mills, and museum collections as well as intact 19th century streetscapes.
