Toss in a chance to see the northern lights (aka aurora borealis), and it’s an absolute no-brainer. Caused by Earth’s magnetic field interacting with solar wind and charged particles from the sun, the swirling spectacle of blue and green hues is truly something to behold. Because the aurora is best seen at higher latitudes and there are fewer big cities lighting up the night sky, Alaska is a prime location for seeing the northern lights. The phenomenon is particularly strong from late August to late April, the best time to plan a visit. Once you make it to Alaska, check aurora forecasts on the Space Weather Prediction Center, the Aurora Forecast from University of Alaska Fairbanks, or AuroraReach. Be ready to head outdoors in the wee hours — the aurora most often appears from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. With the solar maximum (when the sun has the most sun spots) ramping up in 2025, there’s an even better chance of spotting those dancing solar particles. In the years leading up to the solar maximum, the odds are better for stronger geomagnetic storms to interact with the Earth and produce more auroras.
