At Trinity Gardens School we ensure teachers have relevant, up - to - date resources to engage, challenge and immerse students in numeracy. Staff regularly attend Professional Development and work with partnership schools to support staff in learning, design and moderation. Some strategies and programs utilised throughout the school include: Too Smart, iMaths, Sumdog IXL and Maths Mate. There is a role parents can play in supporting and encouraging maths at home. This would be to recognise Dear Parents and Families As Marg Erwin is on leave for the last four weeks of term I have taken on the position as Principal of Trinity Gardens School. Due to the wonderful support of the leadership and staff the transition has been a collaborative and rewarding one. This week it was lovely to receive several emails from families about the positive learning and support their child or children have received from their teachers or the school staff in general. It is important in our busy world to acknowledge the work teachers do in an ever changing society. I know these emails and positive verbal conversations make the teachers feel valued and supported. I have also completed the formal Negotiated Educational Plans for students recognised as having a disability. All families commented on the great work staff are doing to support these students and the adjustments made to ensure a positive learning experience. The school continues to involve all staff in training to further develop their skills and knowledge in supporting students with additional needs. As a school we are committed as part of our School Improvement Plan to develop and maintain high quality teaching to improve student learning outcomes. On Thursday the Pupil Free Day focused on staff analysing and using data to inform their teaching practice within Literacy. Data sets used to inform teaching included Formative Assessment and Summative Assessments. Formative Assessment involves teachers working collaboratively to design learning, assess and moderate student work. Summative Assessment is inclusive of NAPLAN and PAT tests and Running Records. After morning tea, staff engaged in the use of Digital Technologies and how to build student knowledge and understanding of coding through the use of Scratch, a free program you can download at home. During the day the Steiner Stream participated in a training around Bothmer Gym facilitated by the class 6 teacher Giulius Canteri. Bothmer Gym was part of Rudolf Steiner ’ s intentions for physical movement and health. At the end of the day Nat Carling brought together the elements of Play is the Way to demonstrate and actively involve teachers with new ideas and activities to incorporate in teaching and learning programs. As part of the pupil free day support staff attended a training by our district DECD Behaviour coach Rosie Bannister to up skill them in dealing with student behaviour in a proactive and safe way. Staff reflected on the needs of the school and Rosie then spoke about what causes behaviour, triggers for behaviour and various strategies to de - escalate behaviour. Overall it was a highly successful and productive day. See page 8 for photos of the day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and community for their continued support and wish you all a lovely Easter break filled with lots of Easter eggs (maybe not too many!) but also quality time with your families over the Easter break. Next Wednesday I’m joining the Year 6 student leaders for a young leaders’ workshop with other students from Lutheran schools across South Australia. We value our student leaders highly and will seek opportunities to broaden their horizons. With this in mind, we are also introducing on - site workshops for all our R - 12 leaders throughout this year. With Year 12 formal a fortnight away, the precursor to that event is our Class of 2017 Reunion, where we get to catch up over a casual dinner our most recently graduating Year 12s. They may no longer officially be part of our College family, but we still love them. What a night that will be! Finally, I’m heading to Brisbane on Sunday afternoon with Tori Weiss, Penny McKenzie and Tyna Newman, with our focus being on several school visits and structured time spent on strategic planning for Encounter as we look towards 2025. Merely drifting into the future gives us no confidence, so an intentional approach to where we are heading (and how we’ll get there) is critical to ensuring we can continue providing the very best for Encounter families. In our absence, Jacob Hambour and Jon Grear will be co - Acting Principals. God’s Blessings Kelvin Hearts and MINDS I Term 1 I ISSUE 4 I ELC I NEWSLETTER From the PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, I enjoyed another of my many Encounter 'firsts' since joining the team, at Sports Day last Friday. What a fantastic day! The weather was perfect and it was great to see so many people from our community come together to support the students as they competed for their House teams. Well done to Rosetta on winning Sports Day for the second year in a row, under the capable leadership of Yu Cameron, Kate Lommon, Sophie Stratfold, Zac Martin and Leila Britton . Coordinating such an event is always a massive under- taking and a great deal of people worked extremely hard to ensure the day ran so smoothly. A big thanks to all the staff for their efforts, as well as the fabulous P&F who kept us fed and watered throughout the day. This year for the first time, also saw the Year 12 Food and Hospitality students prepare delicious breakfast burgers which were gratefully devoured by the early starters. Learning across the Junior School is progressing well with the first Units Of Inquiry coming to an end and new units commencing. It has been fantastic to see such rich learning occurring in the classrooms and such engagement in the units by the students. Be sure to ask your children what they have been up to. Enjoy your weekend, Blessings, Tori Weiss Dear Parents/Caregivers, One of the things that makes me proud to be part of the Encounter community is the wonderful sense of care that our students demonstrate towards each other. Those of you who were able to attend Sports Day would have seen the beautiful interactions between our younger and older students, and a fantastic sense of team that was evident in each of the Houses. Congratulations to Rosetta House on their victory, but most importantly, congratulations to all those who gave their all on the day. Whilst Sports Day was underway I was meeting with representatives from USA Education and the NCAA exploring pathways, both sporting and academic, for our students. I also had the opportunity to speak with Maxima about potential vocational traineeships and apprenticeships. Connecting with both overseas and Australian universities, employers and training providers on a regular basis ensures that our students are navigating their pathways with the most up to date and relevant information available to them. Every student’s individual pathway is important at Encounter. We pride ourselves on ensuring we provide them with as much experience and information to make an informed decision. I hope you have a wonderful week. Blessings, Penny McKenzie From the Head of JUNIOR From the Head of MIDDLE & SENIOR Scholastic Book Club Orders are due Wednesday 28th March. ========================================== Thursday 14th December 2017 Dear Parents/Caregivers, What an amazing week to finish the year off. Although disappointing that Space Teddy didn’t reach the heights of last year’s launch, it was still an unbelievable experience. We certainly receive a great deal of media coverage. I would like to thank Marius and Sharon Van Rijnsoever for their support and expertise for Space Teddy. Mr Robson also played an important role in connecting the Teddynaughts to this years experience. We also acknowledged the students who had put in that extra effort this year at our Excellence Awards Ceremony. It was great to see the emotion and surprise the students felt when they received their awards. I would like to thank all of our parent community for your amazing support this year. I would also like to thank my hard working teaching and support staff. Together we make an incredible special school. This year we have decided to go digital for our 2017 Yearbook. Congratulations to Victoria Da Silva and Georgia Martin for submitting this year’s winning front page design. Click here to open your Online Yearbook or PDF Yearbook . Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy summer break. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. John Marwick Proud Principal Forrest Hill School Caught on Camera! Mr Marwick has been seen in the junior playground. What was he up to I wonder? Was he having circle time with our young friends? Was he talking about his favourite subject Maths? Or... was he taking shelter from the afternoon sun? Whatever it was, Mr Marwick certainly looked happy and so did our Juniors! Our Year 9 students have settled well into their school life at Lynfield, with the majority making the most of the new opportunities that are available to them. I would encourage our junior students to become involved in extra - curricular activities offered at the College. This is a great way for students to meet different people and also to sh are in the wider community. Students should read the daily notices to keep informed about cultural and sporting opportunities that may arise. The daily notices are also posted on student noticeboards and on e - LynC. After having to cancel the first date set down for our Athletics Sports because of wet weather, the students participated in a very well run event yesterday. The House system encourages participation from all levels with some fierce contests in a variety o f point - allocated events. Results fr om the day s appear in the sports section of this newsletter. In the past two w eeks, we have held two parents’ eveni ngs – Year 9 Parents’ Evening and NCEA Information Evening - both very well supported by parents keen to monitor the development of opportun ities for their sons and daughters. It is very useful for parents and staff to exchange ideas and learn from each other about how to enhance student learning. If you attended these evenings and have any further questions that may have arisen, please cont act Deputy Principal Steven Mouldey or Deputy Principal Richard Winn. On Tuesday 14 March a Community of Learning Wh ā nau Hui will be held at the College Te Ringa Ā whina Marae at 6.30pm, where we especially look forward to seeing our Kapa Haka students pe rform before their participation in the ASB Polyfest. We are half way through Term 1 with teaching staff having undertaken assessment activities with all students. Progress Repor t writing has begun. These reports will indicate the academic progress, e ffort, organisation and lessons missed by students in each subject. As such they will provide an indication to you of how focused and settled your children are in their learning and where support is required. In Newsletter No. 1 all families are made awa re of the homework pamphlet that can be accessed on our website. This is a guide on how you can help with homework and what the school’s expectations are. Progress Rep orts wi ll be issued on Wednesday 29 March. An individualised information sheet about o ur on line appointment booking schedule for the Progress Conferences will accompany reports. Progress Conferences These will be held in Weeks 10 and 11 of this term. Parents are asked, wherever possible, to attend the conferences on the day which correspo nds with the first letter of the student’s surname. Thur sday 6 April (student surnames A - L ) , 4 - 7pm Tuesday 11 April (student surnames M - Z ) , 4 - 7pm All parents/caregivers are expected to visit their child’s teachers on one of these afternoons as it is a part of the school/home partnership so vital to a student’s progress. School Gate Signage As a matter of student safety, please ensure that you close our school pedestrian gate after entering and leaving our school grounds The gate signage gives clear instructions and is there as a reminder for all parents, caregivers and visitors to the school. Your cooperation with this matter is appreciated. Exemption From School Parents and caregivers are reminded it is a Department of Education (DoE) requirement that you must complete an exemption from school application and discuss the nature of the intended leave with the school principal prior to making travel arrangements. Exemption forms are available through our sc hool office. Students on leave from school will be marked as absent for the period of leave and this will be recorded on their school reports and pupil record cards. It is therefore important that parents and caregivers who choose to take annual leave outside of the school holiday periods are aware that it is detrimental to your child’s education, and prolonged continuous absences may be seen as educational neglect by the DoE Child Wellbeing Unit. Continued leave may result in an interview with parents. It is expected that ALL school aged children be at school every day that the school is open. Your cooperation with this matter is appreciated. Health Care Plans Please ensure that, if your child has a medical condition, our school office staff is made aware. There are many students, particularly Kindergartens, with known medical conditions eg: asthma, anaphylaxis and allergies, who have not provided a Health Care Plan for their child. It is a Do E m andatory requirement that Health Care Plans are in pla ce for any child with a known medical condition. The information required by the school is obtainable from your child’s doctor. The doctor will ne ed to complete a section of the Health Care Plan indicating what health care procedures our staff would need t o follow in the event of an emergency. Your cooperation with this matter is your priority. Kiss And Drop Thank you to those parents and caregivers for complying with the Kiss and Drop Zone procedures. However, please be considerate of others by making su re you DO NOT ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 3.00pm ! Arriving early, only adds to the congestion on the Hume Highway as traffic builds up turning from the Hume highway into Beresford Road. Your cooperation with this matter is appreciated. ================================================== Northern Region School Sport 13 - 17 Years Water Polo (Girls) State Championships 16 - 19 March 2017 Northern Region School Sport Dear parent/carer, Congratulations on your child's/ward's selection fo r Northern representation.
