A friend of mine emailed me recently with the subject line: âItâs time for a change.â In the message, my friend told me sheâd become part of the trend dubbed The Great Resignation after just two years in her position. Why? Though sheâd been hired as a content strategist to help with a new digital transformation initiative, she found herself relegated to writing, sending, and measuring sales-oriented emails. Her decision to move on didnât mean she considered the work unimportant, she said. It just wasnât what she was hired to do. Despite being paid well, she found herself questioning how much of her life she wanted to devote to those tasks. And, though she felt some stress about making the decision, she felt grateful to have the ability to make it. Business leader Peter Drucker wrote about a similar situation from his own life in his book Management Challenges for the 21st Century. âWhat one does well â even very well and successfully â may not fit with oneâs value system.â Drucker had quit his job as a successful investment banker because it didnât match his values. âI saw no point in being the richest man in the cemetery,â he wrote. The ability to make decisions like those Drucker and my friend made depends on what I call the âbandwidth of change.â The range (or bandwidth) of oneâs ability to choose to make changes like this derives from many things: confidence, talent, skills, and economic privilege, to name a few. Put simply: Itâs easier for some to make job changes based on their values than it is for others. Even so, I agree with Drucker about looking to values to guide your decisions when thatâs possible. In my experience, whatever the range of options, starting with values makes the answers easier to find. As Americans celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday next week, many of us will contemplate changes big and small. Iâm feeling grateful for the range of changes I can choose. Whether that range grows or shrinks in my own life, I find big decisions no less emotional and no less difficult. But the fact that theyâre decisions in my control makes me grateful.
