As a dual career couple and parents to two incredibly fun teens, our lives are full with activities, but we go at this thing called life with a lot of love. Ty and I met unsuspectingly at a community event in Maryland where I was volunteering with former colleagues. Ty looked like a bit of a newcomer. I certainly had not seen him before. When I found out he was just a few months new to the area, I offered to show him around town. I’d moved to Upper Marlboro five years prior and just knew my longtime-Maryland family would always welcome a new friend. After exchanging numbers, many weeks passed as we each continued on with our work, which required both of us to travel full time – me as a political staffer and he as a military official. As busy as our schedules were, Ty asked me out on our first date as soon as our calendars aligned, which happened to be Valentine’s Day in 2015. The heavily falling snow in Baltimore was a perfect backdrop for a low lit dinner and show at the theater. Given our interests in community focused work, we began to collaborate in our community and civic engagement. We worked together to build a youth-serving organization for young people from Mississippi, all alongside our busy work schedules. Despite all of the time we spent working together, and getting to know one another, Ty still managed to orchestrate a surprise proposal at his military retirement ceremony. We married soon after and have been celebrating in community with friends and family ever since. I learned early on that Ty’s dedication to his family and his community are an integral part of who he is. Even though we began our life together in Maryland, Ty remained determined to return to Mississippi, where he was born and raised, to continue serving the very communities that shaped and molded him. He continues to advocate for all of his fellow Mississippians, recognizing that we’re all in this together, no matter who we are, what we do, or where we live in the state. Ty is committed to centering and uplifting Mississippi voices, particularly those that often go unheard. As someone who has also worked in government, and as an educator and avid youth supporter, I also know what it takes to serve community – it takes heart and relentless desire to pursue what’s good for all of us, and that’s exactly who Ty is. Ty’s commitment to continue serving community and country as a candidate for the U.S. Senate is a direct reflection of these values. His drive to help others is unrelenting, and together, we can send him to Washington to continue this work in November. He was born and raised in the small town of Rolling Fork, and is a proud son of the Mississippi Delta. Frustrated by the lack of action from lawmakers on the issues facing people in Mississippi–and believing that the hard-working voters of Mississippi deserve much better–Ty Pinkins decided to run for office: the United States Senate in 2024.
