[Netflix’s new coming-of-age story is a randy romp; Amazon may have the next addictive British terrorist thriller; and after a Season 2 hiccup, this buzzy crime drama is back to being one of the best](#) [TV Guide Watch This Now!]( Hello! Are you still fuming over the fact that your favorite show/actor [didn’t win a Golden Globe]( Well, they get another shot at a trophy this weekend with the Critics’ Choice Awards (Sunday, Jan. 13 at 7/6c on The CW), another awards show created to definitively decide, once and for all, the best in film and television. So if you’re into watching three hours of the same names called out as last weekend to win an award you probably didn’t even know existed until now, you know what to do on Sunday. Here are our TV picks for the weekend: [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( WATCH THIS NOW! [True Detective]( [True Detective returns to greatness]( Season 3 premieres Sunday at 9/8c on HBO If you swore off True Detective after its lackluster and heavily mustachioed second season, it’s time to reconsider. Oscar-winner [Mahershala Ali]( takes the lead in this return to form for the crime drama, in which a case involving missing children unfolds over three timelines. Ali is extraordinary (as is the make-up department, which does wonders with forehead wrinkles), and the rural Arkansas setting is as unsettling as Season 1’s bayou. There’s no “flat circle” talk, but it’s still high-quality television and an early frontrunner for best of the year. GET SOME [Sex Education]( [Sex Education is a real coming-of-age story]( Series premieres Friday on Netflix The typical high school comedy about kids who can’t wait to lose their V-card gets upended in this smutty but thoughtful look at raging hormones. [Gillian Anderson]( plays an intimacy therapist who is incredibly open about sex, much to the chagrin of her embarrassed son who wants nothing to do with “doing it.” Using what his mom taught him (and the various items she leaves around the house), he teams up with another campus outcast to start underground sex therapy lessons at school. It’s funny, shocking and at times very graphic, but it’s all underlined with a ton of heart. FROM ACROSS THE POND [Informer]( [Is Informer the next Bodyguard?]( Series premieres Friday on Amazon The BBC’s [Bodyguard]( came out of nowhere to become a massive hit in England and made waves in the U.S. on Netflix, and this thriller could follow suit. Informer won’t make your heart burst out of your rib cage like the intense Bodyguard did, but it does explore counter-terrorism through the sketchy world of police informants. It also examines how morally gray police use dubious tactics to rope in “volunteers” to be snitches, and the dangers of racial profiling for what’s supposedly the greater good. Keep an eye out for newcomer [Nabhaan Rizwan]( who plays the charming young man who’s forced to rat on terrorists for no other reason than the color of his skin. BACK TO THE FUTURE, MAN [Future Man]( [Future Man paints a bleak and silly future]( Season 2 premieres Friday on Hulu Hulu’s sci-fi comedy borders on stupid, but it’s so committed to its sophomoric and silly humor that it’s admirable. [Josh Hutcherson]( stars as a loser whose prowess at a video game gets him recruited by time-traveling soldiers to save the future of the world, and despite the grave stakes, Future Man finds time to make plenty of filthy jokes. Whereas Season 1 largely took place in the past and present, Season 2 looks like it’s going to be set more in the apocalyptic future. GRIFFIN IN 2020 [Family Guy]( [Family Guy pits Peter vs. Trump]( Sunday at 9/8c on Fox It seems ludicrous that Family Guy has never really gone after Donald Trump, aside from a few jokes here and there, given its propensity for tearing celebs a new one and creator [Seth MacFarlane]( political views, but that comes to an end on Sunday when Peter gets a job working at the White House as the new press secretary. The show ain’t going easy on the prez either; in the only clip of the episode released, cartoon Trump makes some inappropriate comments… about his own daughter. Diggity!
