[Noam Chomsky: "Worship of Markets" Is Threatening Human Civilization](
C.J. Polychroniou, Truthout
How did we ever get to this surreal point where everything that is threatening human civilization -- from geopolitical instabilities created by extreme economic inequality to the existential crises posed by global warming and nuclear weapons -- is subject to denial? The answer is to be found in the worship of markets imposed by the capitalist system, according to world-renowned thinker and linguist Noam Chomsky.

[Want to Fund Medicare for All? Stop Funding Weapons of War.](
William Rivers Pitt, Truthout
The price of a new B-21 bomber could fully fund Meals on Wheels for more than 65 years. The cost of the F-35 Joint Strike fighter program could fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for more than 22 years. The cost of the war on terror could fund the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program for more than 345 years. The money needed to fund Medicare for All is there. It always has been.

[House Progressives Say Condemning Trump's Racism Isn't Enough: "We Must Impeach"](
Jake Johnson, Common Dreams
On Tuesday night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a nonbinding resolution condemning President Trump's racist attacks on four Democratic congresswomen. Shortly after, progressives and lawmakers argued that the House must go beyond a "strongly worded" rebuke and called for impeachment hearings to begin immediately.

[Lawsuit Could Force For-Profit Detention Centers to Pay Detainees Minimum Wage](
Claire Heddles, Truthout
At least seven lawsuits have been filed against private prison companies CoreCivic, GEO Group and others for profiting off uncompensated detainee labor. The detention centers receive up to $95 per day to detain a person but pay as little as $1 per day for their labor. A second set of lawsuits brought by immigrant detainees also accuse detention centers of violating labor trafficking laws by forcing people to work.

[Outrage Over Ice Cream Licker Should Prompt Us to Ask: What Is a Crime?](
Sarah Lustbader, The Appeal
A teenager who licked a tub of Blue Bell ice cream and put it back on the shelf sparked national public wrath, and is now being thrust into the juvenile justice system. Meanwhile, no one called it a crime when 10 people were hospitalized after eating listeria-tainted Blue Bell ice cream. This is emblematic of our criminal legal system: Individuals are targeted for petty offenses while multimillion-dollar companies get away with murder.

[Eric Garner Family Outraged DOJ Won't Prosecute His Murder by Police](
Amy Goodman and Juan González, Democracy Now!
Five years ago, Eric Garner was killed when a white New York City police officer, Daniel Pantaleo, wrestled him to the ground and applied a fatal chokehold. A medical examiner testified that the chokehold triggered an asthma attack leading to Garner's death, which was ruled a homicide. On Tuesday, federal prosecutors announced they will not bring civil rights charges against Pantaleo, who remains on the police force and earns a salary of more than $100,000.

[Liz Cheney Goes All-In on Trump's Racism: Meet the Future of the GOP](
Heather Digby Parton, Salon
Rep. Liz Cheney is almost certainly thinking about running for president, as is former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. But only one of them will be seen by most Trump Republican voters as a leader they can trust -- and it won't be the woman of color whose parents came to the U.S. to start a new life. It'll be the white authoritarian nationalist with a Republican establishment pedigree a mile long who eagerly marches in lockstep with the president.

[Chelsea Manning's Daily Fines for Grand Jury Resistance Increase to $1000](
Kevin Gosztola, Shadowproof
If Manning "persists in her refusal" to testify for the next 15 months or until the grand jury's term ends, her legal team says she will face more than $440,000 in fines -- an excessive amount that may violate her Eighth Amendment rights under the Constitution. Manning's attorneys filed a motion challenging the harshness of the fines in May, but the federal court has yet to rule on the motion or hold a hearing.

[I Was Given Medication Without My Informed Consent — and It Wasn't Illegal](
Casey O'Brien, Rewire.News
I was treated and given medication in the emergency room without my enthusiastic and informed consent -- and shockingly, my provider didn't break the law by doing so. When patients are conscious and able to participate in the conversation, health service providers should be required to give them the information they need to make informed decisions regarding their course of treatment.

[Trump's Racism Is Not Blundering -- It Is Tactically Deliberate](
William Rivers Pitt, Truthout
When Trump held his one-man Sunday morning Klan rally on Twitter, it was not a blunder. When he dug his heels in on Monday morning and said the women of color he insulted were the ones who owed an apology, it was not an "oops." It was part of an ever-building strategy he has been implementing, day in and day out, since announcing his desire to become president.

[As U.S. Modernizes Its Nuclear Arsenal, Costs and Risks Soar](
Jon Letman, Truthout
Seventy-four years after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and despite several nuclear treaties, the U.S. is pushing forward with plans to modernize and rebuild its nuclear stockpile at a cost that could reach $2 trillion over 30 years. This will likely trigger a new, deadlier arms race, especially in light of Trump's efforts to withdraw from arms control agreements and his threats to obliterate the U.S.'s enemies.
