[t] [truthout] PROGRESSIVE PICKS [Tell a friend about Truthout!]( [Donate Today!]( Truthout is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization; donations are tax deductible. Summer is here and all we want to do is read a good book! That's why we’ve compiled the perfect reading list. The books we selected delve into the details of policies in Trump’s America, the lives of those fighting for social justice, and how war has shaped the nation. Up first is [The Instinct for Cooperation]( an interview-based graphic novel featuring Noam Chomsky's political ideas and activism. Inside, learn how capitalism atomizes society into individuals who accept the status quo, and explore the importance of group action to create spaces for resistance and achieve revolutionary goals. In [American Nightmare]( Henry Giroux analyzes the elements of fascism in a historical context and how they come together to create extreme situations. He gives particular focus to historical memory, and how comparing elements of repression, exploitation and resistance can help to stop fascism in its tracks. Medea Benjamin's [Inside Iran]( is a crucial look into US policy, from the Iranian revolution and a hostage crisis at the US Embassy in Tehran that turned into a 444-day diplomatic standoff -- and the (un)diplomatic relations that followed -- to recent developments under Trump. The last book on our list is Tom Engelhardt’s [A Nation Unmade by War]( which explores the idea that the American Empire is locked in infinite war and only capable of destruction. When you order a Progressive Pick from Truthout, you're not just building your library. You're also donating to fund independent journalism and support the causes, writers and publishers you care about. To see our full catalog, [click here](. [The Instinct for Cooperation: A Graphic Novel Conversation with Noam Chomsky]( By Jeffrey Wilson; Illustrated by Eliseu Gouveia A graphic novel that brings Chomsky's political analysis to bear on real people's stories on the front lines of America's struggle for economic justice and human dignity. It innovatively balances real-life stories of struggle with a conversation the author had with Chomsky on how best to understand them. [American Nightmare: Facing the Challenge of Fascism]( By Henry A. Giroux In this searing critique of the Trump presidency and the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S., Henry Giroux asks, How have we arrived here, and what can be done? In a discussion of events that ranges from the Administration's ongoing attempts to repeal Obamacare and its anti-immigration policies and travel bans, to the normalization of a culture of cruelty and the "weaponization of ignorance," Giroux details the urgency of our current crisis. [A Nation Unmade by War]( By Tom Engelhardt From its founding, the United States has been a nation made by wars. Through incisive analysis and characteristic wit, veteran author Tom Engelhardt ponders whether in this century, its citizenry and government will be unmade by them. [Inside Iran: The Real History and Politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran]( By Medea Benjamin Tackling the complexities in Iran’s system of government and US policy toward the nation, its history (including meddling by the US), and its citizens’ way of life, Inside Iran makes short work of the inflammatory rhetoric surrounding US-Iranian relations, and presents a realistic case for the two nations’ future.
