And of course, PayPal Holdings, Inc. (PYPL) serves as a primo poster child for the boom. Guess what? Its latest results underscore the staying power of this trend that Iâve been talking about. Total payment volumes soared 46% year-over-year in the first quarter. Even more impressive, that growth rate has been accelerating, even as the pandemic wanes. Thatâs some serious momentum! Given PayPalâs entry into cryptocurrencies late last year, it represents a true âdigital goldâ investment. Especially since a super version of the PayPal app is slated for launch in Q3. Itâll be an all-in-one platform that CEO Dan Schulman says will provide a âcustomized and unique shopping, financial services, and payments experience.â All Mobile, All the Time Letâs be real, though. The surge in digital and contactless payments wouldnât be possible without mobile phones. They act as the enabling technology to facilitate adoption. Iâm sure we all know how prevalent mobile phones have become. Over 4.8 billion people own one. But do we truly understand the extent to which they dominate our lives? As you can see in the chart, the average person uses their mobile phone 58 times per day, for an average of 4 hours and 12 minutes. The investment implications are unavoidable: Any consumer-facing company needs to have a strong mobile strategy. Insist on it for any companies youâre considering buying!
