Chidambaram compares India's fiscal deficit under UPA and NDA, BJP says 'flip-flop' Former Finance Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday compared the country's fiscal deficit in the terminal years of the UPA government and the current NDA government and said it was 4.5 per cent in 2013-14, while it is 5.8 per cent in 2023-24. He noted that there will be ups and downs in any regime and said if the NDA government points to the pandemic years (2020-21 & 2021-22), the UPA can point to the years of the International Financial Crisis (2008-09) and the 'taper tantrum' (2013-14).Chidambaram said much has been made of the fiscal correction and added, "There is no place for a bullhorn in economics.His remark comes after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Interim Budget 2024-25, said the revised estimate of the fiscal deficit for FY24 stands at 5.8 per cent.
