Serving our community has been the honor of my life, and it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. In 2018, this incredible team won our bitterly competitive race, helping me make history as the youngest Black woman to ever serve in Congress. And since then, I’ve had nine pieces of legislation enacted into law — reducing the cost of generic insulin, lowering health insurance costs and premiums, improving maternal health care for our veterans, and more. We have a lot to be proud of, but as we both know, there’s still a lot of work ahead of us. And folks, I’m nowhere near finished fighting for the people of Illinois. But this team is no stranger to a tough fight. In 2018, our historic campaign defeated a four-term Republican incumbent, in a district Donald Trump won by four points just two years earlier. In 2020, we faced an onslaught of right-wing attacks from our Trump-endorsed opponent and mountains of outside spending, but still, this team persevered — winning one of the closest races in the entire country by just 5,374 votes. We’re in for another tough election this year: Republicans are focused on stopping our progress, and it’s clear they’ve got their eyes on this seat. In the weeks and months ahead, I know we’ll see nasty attacks from our right-wing opponents (we’ve got five of them!), and at times, things may look discouraging. But I know in my heart we can win this race, no matter how much money our opponents spend or how much hate they throw at us, because this incredible team has shown time and again that we’re dedicated to making life better for working families, and we’re willing to work for it.
