The bridge is named after a figure of hate and division. That needs to change. [POLITICO: “Clyburn renews calls to rename Edmund Pettus Bridge for John Lewis”]( [Rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge in John Lewis’ memory >>]( {NAME}, Rep. John Lewis -- my dear friend of 60 years -- led hundreds of marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma in a peaceful demonstration fighting for the voting rights of Black Americans. The marchers were met by Alabama state troopers armed with tear gas and clubs. Protesters were brutally beaten, including John who suffered a skull fracture. That day in March became known as Bloody Sunday. The Edmund Pettus Bridge that John and protesters marched across is named after a grand wizard of the Klu Klux Klan. The bridge’s name is a disservice to our country, one that prides itself on its freedoms, and it’s a disservice to John and everyone who have made tremendous sacrifices in the name of equality and justice for all. [Will you add your name today and join me in demanding that the Edmund Pettus Bridge be renamed the John R. Lewis Bridge?]( [ADD YOUR NAME >>]( In all movements, there will be those who stand above the rest in their commitment and service to the movement. John is one of those people. When John and I met in 1960, we both joined the Civil Rights Movement. But where I only adopted nonviolence as a tactic in our fight for civil rights, John internalized it. Nonviolence was John’s way of life -- from the moment he walked across that bridge in Selma nearly six decades ago to the 27 years we served together in the U.S. House of Representatives and all the way to his passing last month. John is an example of all that is good in our country. The Edmund Pettus Bridge should be renamed after someone like him who symbolizes unity, peace, and justice -- not racism and hate.
