The personal savings rate is a popular measure with the Federal Reserve for monitoring inflation trends. If consumers are drawing down savings, it may be a sign that prices will keep heading higher as demand for goods can grow faster than supply in the short run. The past few months has seen personal savings drop, even as consumer spending has flatlined overall. The savings rate shot higher at the start of the pandemic as households cut back on spending. Now, that trend has reversed, with the savings rates back to its lowest level since December 2017. With this trend reversed, it’s another sign that the pandemic is largely over, and that consumers are coming back to their pre-pandemic spending habits. That tends to bode well for the stock market, at least until the next fear causes the savings rate to soar again. One trader sees a deep value in shares and the potential for them to move higher. That’s abed on the January 2023 $150 calls. With 389 days until expiration, 1,770 calls traded against a prior open interest of 121, for a 15-fold rise in volume. The buyer of the calls paid $131.65 to make the trade. » [FULL STORY]( IN OTHER NEWS • [Consumer Spending Slightly Rises in November]( Consumers increased their spending by 0.6 percent in November, according to data from the Commerce Department. That’s a slowdown from the 1.4 increase that occurred in October. Rising inflation expectations, and the start of the Omicron variant toward the end of the month may have contributed to the slowdown. • [FAA Calls for Increased Aircraft Inspections]( The Federal Aviation Administration is calling for increased inspections for aircraft systems and components, including engine cowlings and engine fan blades. The call comes after a fan blade failure on a flight in January caused a Boeing (BA) 777-200 engine to fail. • [Buy Now, Pay Later Growth Highlights Fees and Costs]( One of the fastest growing parts of finance are BNPL offerings, short for buy now, pay later.
