The Dow and broader U.S. stock market struggled for direction on Tuesday, as investors continued to monitor corporate earnings and economic data.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) closed at 30,937.78, where it was down 23.22 points, or 0.1%, on the day.  The broad S&P 500 Index (SPY) of large-cap stocks edged down 0.2% to close at 3,849.57.  Meanwhile, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index (QQQ) fell 0.1% to 13,626.06.    A measure of implied volatility known as the CBOE VIX (VXX) finished relatively flat on Tuesday. The so-called "investor fear index" reached an intraday low of 22.55 on a scale of 1-100, where 20 represents the historical average. It would eventually settle at 23.23, where it was virtually unchanged.  In commodities, oil prices edged slightly lower on Tuesday, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures falling 23 cents, or 0.4%  On the data front, the Richmond Fed manufacturing index weakened to 14 in January from 19 in December. The S&P/Case-Shiller home price indices rose 9.1% annually in November, up from 8% the previous month. Meanwhile, the November housing price index rose 1.%, official data showed.  The Final Word: Economic data will remain in the spotlight in the second half of the week with reports on durable goods orders, GDP, initial jobless claims and personal incomes.
