The Dow and broader U.S. stock market declined sharply on Wednesday, as rising Covid-19 cases cast a dark shadow on the global economic recovery.  All of Wall Street's major indices finished in negative territory, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) plunging more than 960 points in intraday trade.  The blue-chip index settled down 941.33 points, or 3.4%, at 26,521.86.  The broad S&P 500 Index (SPY) of large-cap stocks fell 3.5% to close at 3,271.26.  All 11 primary sectors finished in negative territory, with energy plunging over 4%. Information technology, communication services and industrials stocks also fell more than 3% on average.  Meanwhile, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index (QQQ) closed down 3.7% at 11,004.87. The stock prices of Alphabet, Twitter and Facebook declined sharply on Wednesday.  A measure of implied volatility known as the CBOE VIX (VXX) pierced above 40 on Wednesday for the first time since June. The so-called "investor fear index" touched an intraday high of 40.52 on a scale of 1-100, where 20 represents the historic average. The VIX would eventually settle up 16.7% at 38.94.   Commodity markets were equally volatile on Wednesday, as crude prices crashed more than 5%.
