The Dow and broader U.S. stock market tumbled on Wednesday, dragged down by plunging technology and energy companies.  All of Wall Street's major indices reported losses, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) falling 525.05 points, or 1.9%, to 26,763.13.  The broad S&P 500 Index (SPY) of large-cap stocks fell 2.4% to close at 3,236.92. All 11 primary sectors reported declines, with energy leading the pack. Information technology and materials also declined sharply.  Meanwhile, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index (QQQ) plunged 3% to finish at 10,632.99.     A measure of implied volatility known as the CBOE VIX (VXX) rose sharply on Wednesday. The so-called "investor fear index" peaked at 29.73 on a scale of 1-100 where 20 represents the historical average. It would eventually settle up 7.9% at 28.99.  On the data front, U.S. manufacturing activity improved in September, but services output weakened.  Markit's U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) improved to 53.5 in September from 53.1 the month before. Services PMI weakened to 54.6 from 55 in August.  In commodities, gold prices resumed their slide on Wednesday, with December futures contracts plunging below $1,900. The yellow metal fell $46.30, or 2.4%, to $1,861.30 a troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.  Silver prices also fell sharply, losing $1.74, or 7.1%, to $22.79 a troy ounce.  The Final Word: Volatility is returning to the stock market ahead of the presidential election.
