The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4%, the S&P 500 Index climbed 0.8% and the Nasdaq finished 1.5% higher%. For the week, the Dow fell 0.2%, the S&P 500 advanced 1.7% and the Nasdaq climbed 3.7%.   The CBOE VIX Volatility Index, commonly known as the VIX, fell 1.2% on Friday to settle at 24.46 on a scale of 1-100 where 20 represents the historic average. Without Big Tech, the S&P 500 Index would be trading lower for the year.  In economic data, U.S. durable goods orders rose 7.3% in June, which was higher than expected. Nondefense capital goods orders excluding aircraft—a key proxy for business spending plans—rose 3.3%. The S&P/Case-Shiller home price indices rallied 3.7% annually in May. Meanwhile, pending home sales jumped 16.6% in June and 6.3% annually.   The Final Word: COVID-19 continues to be a major threat to the U.S. economy with more than 4.6 million confirmed infection.
