The Dow and broader U.S. stock market rebounded on Friday, as investors remained hopeful that the economy had turned a corner in the wake of COVID-19  All of Wall Street's major indices finished in positive territory, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) rallying 477.37 points, or 1.9%, to 25.605.54.  The broad S&P 500 Index (SPY) of large-cap stocks gained 1.3% to close at 3,041.31. Gains were concentrated in six of 11 primary sectors, with financials leading the pack. Energy and materials companies also reported strong gains.  Meanwhile, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index (QQQ) rose 1% to 9,588.81.  The CBOE Volatility Index, commonly known as the VIX, declined sharply on Friday. The so-called 'investor fear index' reached an intraday low of 34.97 on a scale of 1-100 where 20 represents the historical average. It would eventually settle down 11.6% at 36.05.  Equity markets are coming off a highly volatile Thursday session as investors began to assess the possibility of a second wave of coronavirus infections. As of Friday, there were more than 2 million domestic cases of COVID-19. Globally, the caseload has reached nearly 7.6 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.   The Final Word: Although the worst of the pandemic may be over, the U.S. economy is heading for a sharp contraction this year.
