The U.S. stock market traded mixed on Thursday, as uncertainty over China trade talks weighed on investors’ sentiment.  All of Wall Street’s major indices finished around break-even The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) settled at 27,782.92, where it was virtually unchanged.  The broad S&P 500 Index (SPY) edged up 0.1% to 3,093.73, a new record high.  Meanwhile, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index (QQQ) pared losses to settle flat at 8,479.02.  A measure of implied volatility known as the CBOE VIX (VXX) rose on Thursday, reaching its highest level in three weeks. The so-called “fear index” peaked at 13.81 on a scale of 1-100 where 20 represents the historic average. It would eventually settle at 13.07, gaining 0.5%.  In economic data, U.S. producer inflation rose faster than expected in October, a sign that the Federal Reserve’s rate-cutting strategy was having its desired effect.  The producer price index (PPI) improved 0.4% in October, the Labor Department reported Thursday. In annualized terms, PPI rose 1.1%.  Core PPI rose 0.3% in October and 1.6% annually, official data showed.  Separately, the Labor Department said initial jobless claims rose by 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 225,000 in the week ended November 9. Analysts were expecting a rise to 215,000.  The Final Word: Economic data will remain the focus on Friday, with U.S. retail sales and industrial production scheduled for release.
