The U.S. stock market surged on Wednesday, as bets of a Federal Reserve rate cut offset fears of a slowing global economy. All of Wall Street's major indices reported record gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSEARCA:DIA) jumped 179.32 points, or 0.7%, to 26,966.00. The broad S&P 500 Index (NYSEARCA:SPY) rose 0.8% to close at 2,995.82. All 11 primary sectors reported gains, led by retail estate, which rose 1.5%. Shares of consumer staples companies added 1.4% as a whole. Health care and utilities also outperformed the broader market. The technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index (NYSEARCA:QQQ) advanced 0.8% to 8,170.23. A measure of implied volatility known as the CBOE VIX (NYSEARCA:VXX) continued to recede on Wednesday, as calm trading conditions prevailed. The so-called "fear index" declined 2.8% to 12.57 on a scale of 1-100 where 20-25 represents the historic average. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq closed at 1:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Markets will remain closed for Independence Day and will reopen on Friday. In economic data, U.S. private-sector employers added just 102,000 workers to payrolls last month, far fewer than expected, according to ADP. Analysts had called for an increase of 140,000. The May hiring rate was revised up to reflect a gain of 41,000. Meanwhile, initial jobless claims fell 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 221,000 in the week ended June 29, the Department of Labor reported Wednesday. The Final Word: Stocks have been riding high on the hope that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates at its forthcoming policy meeting. As it currently stands, the likelihood of a July rate cut is 100%, according to CME Group's Fed Fund futures prices.
