U.S. stocks traded mostly lower on Thursday, as the major benchmarks bounced back from a volatile open that was triggered by an unexpected drop in retail sales. The large-cap S&P 500 Index (NYSEARCA:SPY) pared losses to finish at 2,745.68, where it was down 0.3%. Consumer staples and financials stocks headed for big losses, while energy and communication services posted gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSEARCA:DIA) closed down 104.69 points, or 0.4%, to 25,438.58. Meanwhile, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index finished up 0.1% at 7,426.95. A measure of implied volatility known as the CBOE VIX (NYSEARCA:VXX) spiked to multi-week highs through the early morning session. It would later pare gains to settle at 15.99, where it had gained 2.2%. In economic data, U.S. retail sales plunged unexpectedly in December, casting doubts over the health of the consumer-led recovery. Receipts at retail stores declined 1.2% on month, the Department of Commerce reported Thursday. That was the single worst month since September 2009. Excluding automobiles, sales fell 1.8% month-over-month. In a separate report, the Department of Labor said producer prices declined 0.1% in January and were up 2% annually. However, core inflation rose 0.3% on month and 2.6% annually, official data showed. The Final Word: It remains to be seen whether the slowdown in consumer spending was just a one-off or the beginning of a more troubling trend. Consumer spending is the principal driver of the U.S. economy, accounting for more than two-thirds of economic output. We'll talk soon, Dan Dan The Trading God *****Advertisement***** [You?
