U.S. stocks declined sharply last week, as volatility returned amid a sudden surge in government bond yields. The S&P 500 declined 0.6% on Friday, while the Dow fell 0.7% and the Nasdaq 1.2%. Compared to five days ago, the S&P 500 Index fell 1%, the Dow was flat and the Nasdaq fell 3.2%. Year to date, the S&P 500 is up 7.9%, the Dow 7% and the Nasdaq 12.8%. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note surpassed 3.2% on Friday, the highest since 2011. In economic data, U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose 134,000 in September, falling well short of expectations. However, the August tally was revised sharply higher to reflect a gain of 270,000. The unemployment rate in September fell to 3.7%, the lowest since 1969. The Final Word: There’s little doubt that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in December. Investors can therefore expect continued downward pressure on bond prices.
