U.S. stocks declined on Monday, as sliding technology and discretionary shares weighed on the major indexes. The large-cap S&P 500 Index (NYSEARCA:SPY) fell 0.6% to 2,888.80, with losses concentrated in four of 11 primary sectors. Dow industrials (NYSEARA:DIA) declined 92.55 points, or 0.4%, to 26,062.12. Sliding tech shares weighed heavily on the Nasdaq Composite Index (NYSEARCA:QQQ). The tech-heavy benchmark fell 1.4% to close at 7,895.69. A measure of 30-day volatility known as the CBOE VIX (NYSEARCA:VXX) rose on Monday, snapping a five-day losing skid. The so-called “fear index” shot up 12.3% to 13.56 on a scale of 1-100 where 20 represents the historic average. Wall Street’s major indexes rose sharply last week, recouping from a major slump at the beginning of September. However, the bulls aren’t out of the woods yet as September is considered the most volatile month of the year. Trade tensions were back in the headlines Monday after the Trump administration doubled down on a tariff war with China. President Donald Trump issued Beijing a renewed threat that he could impose tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods. Meanwhile, China has reportedly said it will not just play defense in a trade war with the U.S. but will implement punitive measures of its own should President Trump escalate the threat. The Final Word: Investors’ attention will shift back to monetary policy on Tuesday as the Federal Reserve coalesces in Washington to evaluate the economy and set interest rates.
