What’s next for stocks… The ‘FedEx Indicator’ and the Next 30 Trading Days There

What’s next for stocks… [TradeSmith Daily]( The ‘FedEx Indicator’ and the Next 30 Trading Days There are lots of metrics and data points for measuring what to expect from the stock market, but TradeSmith Analyst John Jagerson wants to zero in on one this week – the performance of FedEx Corp. (FDX). The $58 billion shipping giant handles 16.5 million packages per day, so it serves as a type of “barometer” on the health of the economy. If more items are being shipped, it would indicate people are spending more money and businesses are making more money. John says that is more than just an assumption because when FedEx reports earnings and surprises to the upside, he says that the overall market is higher a month later... 75% of the time. But FedEx reported mixed quarterly results last week that indicate things may be going in the opposite direction. Analysts were expecting $4.85 in earnings per share (EPS) and $22.5 billion in revenue. FedEx topped EPS with $4.94 but slightly missed revenue by reporting $21.9 billion. The more alarming figure was daily package volume in its Express business dropped 10% and average daily freight pounds shipped dropped 14%.
