Chart your course for the coming week with this edition of the FogCutter! Here’s what we got on deck for you today: 💣 Stock Market Slides Amidst Banking Sector Earnings 🔻 💣 Cathie Wood's ARK Venture Fund invests in OpenAI 🤖 💣 Video: How to do an Options Trade on SMCI 📹 Markets At A Glance🔎 As of April 15, 2024, 11:15 PM MST Treasure Hunting Climate 📈 Last week, new inflation concerns took center stage for the markets. The CPI reading put fresh doubts on the Feds approach to cutting interest rates throughout the rest of the year. Sprinkle in some fresh geopolitical concerns and you had a recipe for the market to see some selling. As I'm writing this, the S&P 500 is trading right at its 50-day moving average and was able to close above that level Friday. Friday's close marked 110 straight sessions of the S&P 500 closing above the 50DMA. Pretty impressive run these last few months, and it is always good to remember "pullbacks" are healthy and necessary for the financial markets. Finally, when the market goes into "pullback mode" we start looking for areas where it might try to gain a foothold and we adjust accordingly. We like to step back, clean-up our watchlists, and look for fresh opportunities once we see things turning around. We still are proceeding with caution and will continue with a defensive mindset as the market is shaking out some of this profit taking. Happy trading! View From The Crow's Nest 👀 Stock Market Slides Amidst Banking Sector Earnings 🔻 Stocks fell Friday as tech stocks faltered and investors reacted to mixed banking sector earnings to start the earnings season. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.3%, the S&P 500 lost 1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.9%, or over 300 points. Investors are focused on bank earnings and the potential impact of higher-than-expected interest rates this year. BlackRock's earnings kicked off the season, with shares down nearly 2% despite a 36% profit jump.
