After all, it is the milestone that can turn a startup into an unicorn ($1b+ valuation). How can a startup achieve that milestone? Bessemer Venture Partners may know a thing or two about it. The venture capital firm has invested in Shopify, Twilio, Pinterest, Linkedin, Yelp, and Rocket Lab. So, what does the firm notice about startups that achieved $100 million ARR and beyond? It wrote down several things, but it emphasized one thing: - “It is all about demand generation,” wrote Bessemer Venture Partners. That quote truly says it all. The formula is simple: The more leads a startup gets, the more business it gets. HubSpot did a study and found that there’s a strong correlation between the number of leads a company generates versus the revenue it generates. It said that “the companies having the most success are also the ones generating the most leads.” The graph below shows that the larger the company (by the size of employees), the more leads it generates per month: After all, a startup cannot scale up to $100 million ARR if it cannot generate enough leads to support the math of finding enough customers to bring the total revenue to $100 million and beyond. - “…to scale to $25M and beyond requires enough pipeline to support a growing base of sellers, so at this stage it becomes necessary to build a scalable demand gen engine.” So, how can a startup achieve this? By mastering multiple ways to generate demand through several channels – like SEO, events, webinars, paid search, and so on. - “This includes driving demand by all existing channels, exploring new channels (SEO, events, webinars, paid search, etc.), lead scoring, and conversion tracking.” Sales & marketing are the most difficult part for most startups to scale up. A good product isn’t enough. You must get it out to the world. That requires discipline and know-how to be “everywhere” on the Internet to generate demand.
